I think there is a general theme at least with Pink Floyd pressings that I have seen in that German pressings seem to be underrated.
This is my favourite too. This is what I have: 1st UK Press: A-1/B-3 - w/ Black shrinkwrap + postcard 1st JPN press: SOPO 100 - CBS/Sony with poster, postcard, sticker obi 2nd German Pressing: 1C 064-96 918 Italian pressing Part of German 'The Pink Floyd Collection' 15LP box US CBS Half Speed Mastered 2011 EU Reissue 2016 EU Reissue
Interesting. So, out of all of those pressings, the German 064 is your favorite? I may have to find one. I have the 2011 reissue and the SOPO 100. I have an incoming US 'Barry' pressing. You like the SOPO 100 over the CBS Mastersound?
I definitely prefer the SOPO100 over the Mastersound, I'm not a fan of that one at all. But I have to say that maybe I have the "lesser" Mastersound, as I have a 1980 reissue with the matrix 2J / 2AB. I know there's a previous pressing, which might be better. I'd rate them as this: 1. 2nd German 2. 1st UK 3. SOPO
Well, got my 'Barry' copy in the mail. Still in shrink wrap and supposedly EX-NM. Going to clean it and give 'er a spin tonight while I sip on some bourbon.
Update: Love how the Barry sounds. It has the detail of the Japan pressing, if not more, but is so much more lively and warm. Mine is a Barry on A and BL on B. Got one still in shrink wrap. Highly recommend this pressing! I haven't compared it to a UK or the German 064, both of which are on my to buy list. Appreciate the recommendation for the Barry. I think it will keep me happy until I can come across a good UK.
Question for those who’ve heard some of the early German pressings, what is it that supposedly makes ones with later stampers sound better ? I recently bought a NM A-1 / B -1 and think it sounds great. And it plays dead quiet thru the entire LP except for one small tic midway thru Side 1.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the ‘Barry’. Yes, much warmer than the Japanese and quite similar to the UK in fact. The German 062 first issue is more ‘reserved’ than the later 064. The latter is more ‘dramatic’, meaning goosed in the EQ, which works on some tracks IMO but sounds excessive on others.
Thanks for your above input. Anybody else have an opinion? I forgot to mention that my German is the 062 catalog #. Plenty good for me at this time as a final upgrade unless I were to find an early UK in the wild. Not a big enough fan of later Floyd to look online. This one has the postcard and the cover and hard stock inner are easily VG++ to NM.
Well, just randomly offered $45 for a supposedly VG UK A1/B3 from a US seller and got it accepted. We will see.....
That seems way too expensive. Is it that rare in the US? I got VG+ copies for 20$ or so here in Sweden.
Hmmm I hope I didn't overpay. I'm used to seeing A1/B3's go for more in the US. I thought it was a good deal. Please correct me if I am wrong!
Well, I live in Sweden as mentioned, I would never pay 40$ for a VG copy, only a NM one, especially with the kind of album this is, lot of quiet segments. Probably different in the US though.
Please, show me where to find a copy of WYWH UK A1/B3, with at least the vinyl in truly NM playable condition for 40$ (shipping excluded of course), and I'll give you a 20$ gift for your trouble!
Well no, I would buy it myself of course ;^) Im saying I wouldnt pay more. I purchased an EX copy for 30$ though. I grade it more like VG+ but the seller did not so, close enough?
If it's more like VG +, it's not that close IMO, however there are sometimes lucky breaks in this world.
Sure, but some say NM records dont exist either, so all NM sellers are lying in that case. Either way, I would not pay that much for a UK copy.
Thought so, but is a VG WYWH even listenable? A hard rock or punk record I could see it being acceptable, but this is such dynamic music.
The dynamics are not what would bother me, it's the quieter parts, which there are many, that would cause me concern.
