I've been taking a look through the year end charts around the world and looking at rock, metal, prog and other genres (folk, jazz, flamenco etc) to see how things held up this past year. I'll start with the German year end charts for 2020 and move on from there.

In Germany, the top 2 were both hard rock albums and they were joined by many others:

    4- Die Arzte
    7- Metallica
    15- Bruce Springsteen

Nice to see you back and talking about rock, Fusionfan!

I keep trying to tell others on here that rock is doing alright for itself. Falls on deaf ears though. :)

The one chart I'm slightly surprised with is Denmark. Admittedly I haven't been there since 2017, but it's always seemed to be a rock-centric sort of place so I would have expected more albums in their end of year list.

That's actually really high for a non-legacy artist...whose album came out in 2019! It made it to the weekly #1 at the time in fact and stayed on the charts for a while as you can see by the fact that it made even the year-end the 2020 list :)

Thanks Carl! If you're interested (or anyone else is) I'll update it with the weekly results as well which can be more interesting. And yea, around here rock/metal etc is WAY underestimated even commercially and there's not enough coverage of what's going on in recent years to put it mildly.

I know what you mean about Denmark though. It's very disappointing, as is the chart for Norway given the interest in rock there historically, but there's still plenty going on rock-wise there even though the charts are pretty bleak quite often.

Oh I know what you mean! It also shows you how big of an album it was for a young rock artist (who is almost never mentioned here).

I'm definitely interested if you're up for doing the research. It's always fascinating to see what's doing well and I discovered a whole bunch of great new bands through your last rock chart thread. :righton:

Norway used to have very strange charts. A friend of mine had a few pop hits there back in the Nineties so I kept a close eye for a while. It always seemed to be an odd mix of black metal, U.S. singer/songwriter, country, disco and Seventies throwbacks. Shame that it seems to have become more homogenized.

Sure I'll give it a shot if you're interested. I do the research always but I don't always write it up as it takes time and it seemed not terribly appreciated around here (especially when there are people like there were last time who seem to want to cause problems more than anything else).

Norway has definitely undergone a transformation in terms of the charts over time but still retains very strong niche markets. Finland didn't publish year-end charts for 2020 but that's usually the most interesting year-end chart for the Nordic countries. I can still do their weekly charts though if you like :)

It's a bit sad that it's exclusively 40+ year old "classic rock" bands. (I'm ignoring Chris Stapleton and Jason Aldean, which would really classified as "country").
I am a little surprising that Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin don't show up anywhere, considering that they were cornerstones of the classic rock album market for eons.

Yea, the US album market is really predominantly a legacy market for rock unfortunately though week to week you can see more interesting albums occasionally.

Floyd and Zeppelin sometimes show up but let's keep in mind they aren't generally releasing new albums so it's not really unusual that they not be on there.
