This thread is for the discussion of all the Grateful Dead archival live releases. That's Dick's Picks, Dave's Picks, Road Trips, box sets, and the occasional general releases. We'll go through them in order of release, starting with One from the Vault, up to whatever the current release is when we get there. We'll cover one show or release per week. If we get traction and sustained interest, this will take years.
    • This is for CD releases only, not download or LP releases.
    • If it's a compilation from several shows (for example, the London 1974 Dick's Picks or many of the Road Trips), it will be covered at one time.
    • We won't cover compilations released in conjunction with box sets (for example, E72 volume 2).
    • If a release includes substantial portions of multiple shows, each show will be covered in its own week.
    • We will cover bonus discs with their releases.
    • Filler will be considered its own show if it's more than 90 minutes long (including bonus discs if applicable).
    • We're covering the released versions. For example, Dick's Picks Volume 1 was a partial show and out of order, but that was how it was released.
Is this something in which people are interested? I'm open to comments or suggestions on how to make this run smoothly. If there's no interest it won't go anywhere.

I'm not sure how to handle the huge box sets. 30 Trips will take over 6 months but at least it's got a variety of eras. But the complete Europe '72 would mean spending over five months on one tour, and Spring 1990 The Other One is eight weeks. Is this too much?

Large compilation sets like Steppin' Out and So Many Roads, will probably done in one week.

I am not sure whether to include the 50th anniversary deluxe editions in this list, but we've go a couple of years until we get to them so we'll figure it out later...

We had a thread a while back estimating how many commercially released concerts. Consensus was about 250. This includes, for example, 22 shows in Europe suitcase. So at one per week, this is about a five year project. The good news is it would "force" me to listen to that week's selection again. Quite the undertaking.

As I wrote in another Grateful Dead thread, I was taken aback at the age of 17 by Touch of Grey, not a huge fan of the Dead, but I like their stuff, I have a friend who’s a huge Dead fan and he would love this thread.

Not to get off topic but the Dead died with Garcia, no pun intended, just my opinion.

This is a completely ludicrous idea, which is to say "bring it on!" :nyah:

As I mentioned in my response to your original query, we've likely discussed most or many (or all) of these in one way, shape or form in the Grateful Thread, but it would be good to have commentary in a more chronologically organized fashion.

This is really nice; I had no idea that the PNW box was the same size as the 3o trips box, it is huge!

The PNW box is probably about 70% of the overall size of the "porch crusher." The oversized top makes it look larger than it is (plus the perspective in that photo also does that). And the PNW box = 19 CDs while 30 Trips = 80 CDs. There's a fair bit of "dead space" (see what I did there?) in the PNW box.

Ok, this is on. I'll aim to put up a post every Friday afternoon (US mountain time, because that's where I live). Let's hope we get some good discussion here. First up (next Friday 2/12) will be One from the Vault.

I like this pace, although be prepared for some way off topic posts (as most GD threads tend to). I don't own everything, but I have quite a bit to play along with this.

You've also got to figure that there are currently about 9-10 new shows per year added to the "official" canon, between Dave's Picks and the big box sets, so by the time the thread reaches the end of the list posted above, it will have accumulated another year's worth of work. Quite a job!

I will certainly enjoy the thread and will participate -- probably in varying capacities as listener, reader, contributor, and probably buyer on a few occasions -- as time allows.

Possibly unwieldy number of titles, but Grateful Dead = unwieldy so them’s the breaks!

I would suggest that the title be changed to include the term “Album-by-Album Thread” to indicate that it will be a systematic chronological approach in order of release, rather than an ambling, rambling discussion.

You know......in the five years or so that it takes to get through this project, we will have 20 more Dave's Picks AND, lets say an average of one big box (4 shows) and one small box (2 shows) per year, for a total of ~50 more shows. So, we'll basically add a year in the five that it takes to get through the current list....

    Bring it on!
