One of my faves... for that era, it's either him or Bogey... even past his youth, he was still pugnacious and supercilious in something like Mister Roberts...

One thing about him that Bogart couldn’t do was dance.

Yeah I remember seeing that about ten years ago for the first time and being blown away by his screen presence. Everyone else is stiff as a board (Jean Harlow included), but Cagney just exploded. What must it have been like to see that film in 1931!

Stiff acting ? 1931 was just a couple of years from the silent era..Cagney acting was so modern in comparison. Noticed the scene where he picks up Harlow ( with his buddy).. looks like Brian De Palma used that idea in his Scarface film.

That's what I meant. They still thought they were making stage plays.

Are you referring to Tribute to a Bad Man? I like that film though I haven't seen it in years.

Bogart wore black attire ( typecast / baddie ).

Cagney subsequently wrote a poem about HB saying he shouldn’t pick his nose while buying a new car. :)

Cagney, my main man..one of the greatest actors in movie history, whether playing a middle aged exec[One Two Three] a crazed gangster[White Heat] a cowboy[Oklahoma Kid] Mr.Cagney was great in whatever role he chose.

Was watching Love Me or Leave Last Night. By the time that movie came out "the Cagney persona" was on its last legs. His performance is a swan song of sorts to that unfiltered/pre-Code Hollywood bully learns a life lesson story.
Believe that's really why he got the Oscar nod.

Better than 90 percent of his other films. Amazing performance!

If you like Cagney, the chemistry between him and Doris Day is noteworthy.

The Oklahoma Kid was the western Cagney made with HB; don't know why I kept thinking of Virginia City. And Cagney did look like a mushroom with his cowboy hat on!

A truly versatile artist: actor, dancer, singer. He could really do it all.

I remember him getting a tribute at the Oscars around RAGTIME. As they brought him out in his wheelchair he was crying. A beautiful and touching moment, and a well deserved tribute for a legend.

Love Cagney the tough guy. Such an electric, unpredictable screen presence. One of the all-time greats for sure.
In the "to watch" pile, I have the pre-code Picture Snatcher (Lloyd Bacon 1933) which I borrowed from the library. Never seen it before.
