Although the word "great" might not apply, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Pink Floyd's "The Endless River".

Manassas - Pieces double LP comes to mind. Love that album.

It seems like the premise here is a bit blurred - some albums are unashamedly presented as a collection of leftovers and some aren't. There is a difference. Having said that, how about Elvis Costello's "Taking Liberties"?

It was great but not cobbled together. It was intended to be but Waters penned all new material.

2 recent singles & 1 soon-to-be single (albeit not the 45 mono single mixes), a Friends outtake, a Wild Honey outtake with overdubs, 5 new recordings and 2 SMiLE outtakes with overdubs.

Springsteen’s High Hopes springs to mind. Maybe not a great album, but a very good album.

I like these two A LOT:

(okay, not only outtakes / leftovers but also b-sides, cover songs, etc.)

  9. These are all archive releases, and were marketed as such.

He never hid the fact that it was mostly re-worked by his co-producer Ade Fenton, but Gary Numan's 16th studio LP from 2011 called Dead Son Rising was largely born of leftover demo tracks from previous couple of albums and I think it hangs together remarkably well!

Since we’re talking about Great Albums, I won’t mention this one:

I do have a soft spot for it though.

Esp. Disc 1, or "Volume 1." The best.

    I had no idea.
Just looked it up, said 26 rare and 30 brand new tracks.

Certainly not a work of art, but rather the Monkees' Instant Replay has its minutes.

It’s not a great album, but it has some great tunes (especially “I‘m Stepping Out“)!

Big Fun and Get Up With It all contained outtakes from previous albums and were marketed as "new" albums. Possibly Water Babies too.

Circle In The Round and Directions were compilations of unreleased material.

    But yes, slippery slope.

John Coltrane ‎– The Africa Brass Sessions, Vol. 2. released in 1974 is what the title implies. Outtakes not used on the Africa/Brass album. I like it more than the first album.

This one's debatable but, Peter Gabriel's "Birdy" soundtrack. Dan Lanois mostly pieced it together from old backing tracks.

Great Van album — but it was well understood to be an archival release when it came out in 1998, not a "new" album as such.
Thanks for mentioning it, though — I haven't spun it in a while. :tiphat:
