    Well, technically-speaking the Chateau Sessions weren't laid bare until the A Passion Play: Extended Performance box set. Nightcap has the 80s flute stuff added to the Chateau D'Isaster session recordings.

    Well, many of Zappa's albums have overdubbed drums or bass, so...

    Frankie's discography would be half this thread in a fairer world...but we'd be here all week.

    Kendrick Lamar released the really good Untitled Unmastered in 2016 which consists of previously unreleased demos that originated during the recording of Lamar's album To Pimp a Butterfly (2015).

    For many years I've wondered why they didn't/don't revisit their extensive vaults more often, since it seems like a bit of a struggle to come up with new songs. Tattoo You certainly proved its possible to put out a good album in this manner.

    It seems they have some new stuff in the can right now; we've been hearing rumors of a new album for awhile. If there's not quite enough material, why not just dust off a few half finished older tunes and get er done?

    Prince's Chaos and Disorder is a great example. It was a tossed off Warner Brothers contract fulfillment record that Prince partially cobbled together from Gold Experience and Come sessions and it ends up being a hellafun guitar record.

    I consider it in the good department, but not great.

    Neil Young’s Hawks and Doves...half taken from previous sessions (the best half) and half newly recorded...very underrated album

    Have we really made it this far without a mention of one of the forum's favorites, Pink Floyd's Animals? Of course, "Dogs" (previously known as "You've Got To Be Crazy") and "Sheep" ("Raving and Drooling") were both derived from the Wish You Were Here sessions, so that's well over half the album. Many regard it as their finest achievement and although I wouldn't go quite so far, it's definitely top tier Floyd.

    Released in 1970, but consisted of outtakes and non-LP tracks from a few years earlier. There was no indication anywhere on the packaging that this was a collection of previous material.

    Wire's Change Becomes Us (2013) was drawn from material originally recorded for their aborted fourth album in the early 80s.

    I apologise if someone's mentioned this album already.
    Black and Blue, the Rolling Stones.
    Is this one strung together, as it were?

    Once again, not a Great Album, but it’s The Beatles, after all:

    [IMG]

    Comprising:
    a single from 1966;
    a single from 1967;
    an outtake from Sgt. Pepper;
    a 1967 track specifically recorded for the album;
    a 1967 track not specifically recorded for the album; and
    a 1968 track specifically recorded for the album.

    Oh, and a bunch of 1968 recordings of music by George Martin.

    And I still want the EP. :)

    The Who's Odds & Sods...the title alone says it all. Listening to it does make me wonder why The Who were never satisfied with their studio versions of Naked Eye. Questions for another thread I guess... songs the artists felt they never got right.

    Not from previous album sessions per se, but Buffalo Springfield's Last Time Around was remarkably good and cohesive, especially for a collection of leftovers.
