The last minute and a half or so of "Paper Boats" by Nada Surf. Really cements the mood.

Joe has always been a master of the outro. "Life's been good" is my favorite but he has many great ones. I wish he would do some more.

i know i am probably in the minority with this----but i actually hate the blown opportunities with the coda/outro to "layla." i think the chord changes and piano parts are stunningly beautiful, but the guitar wankery on top of it just ruins it for me. it's meandering and annoying, no melodic stuff but no real fireworks either. they just distract from the most beautiful part of the song. i just wish that they had let the chord progression sing along for ten minutes without guitars.

Playing the 45RPM album version, the bass is the most organic-sounding I've heard, and the faint background vocals sound like they're coming from about 20 feet behind the speakers. Stunning in a subtle way.

 

don't get me wrong, guitar solos can be wonderfully expressive and take a song to another level/place. but the solo stuff here just doesn't do anything for me, it just sounds like two guys trying to out slide guitar each other as far up their fretboard as they could go. i even looked at the wikipedia for some history on the song/composition/recording and found that allman played "his signature high-pitched 'birdcall' on his slide guitar." but i don't care for any allman stuff either. make the song work better instead of finding a signature stroke off move to stick into your work.

watched the "classic albums" episode on peter gabriel/"so" maybe a month ago. it was fantastic, watching tony levin explain certain things and playing those parts.

"Ease" from PiL's Album has always had one of my favorite song outros and album-closing outros.

Based on @fictionalsounds comment, this evening I watched the Classic Albums episode about Peter Gabriel's So. I won't give it away, but I had to laugh when Tony Levin described what he put under the bass strings to get that fabulous sound on "Don't Give Up."
