Jan & Dean included an early version of Dead Man's Curve on the Drag City lp, then added extra vocal and instrumental overdubs to turn it into a hit single some months later.

I always lump "No Place" and "Long Face" together because a) they were import-only and not released in the US, and b) they're the band's 2 worst albums!

This one is a cover of an artist's own song whilst he was playing guitar another group. So I think it counts as he sings both versions.

Off the top of my head, Devo rerecorded Whip It, Uncontrollable Urge, Girl U Want and Through Being Cool for Rock Band (or one of the other like games). I think one of the reasons for doing so was that the multi-tracks for the Freedom of Choice album were said to be missing but the main reason was purely for commercial reasons. As Devo had signed such a bad publishing contract back in the day, they now pretty much stipulate that if you want to license their songs for ads or things like Rock Band, that a new recording must be used so they get a larger bite of the cherry for performance rights than if using the original track from WB.

Yep, and quite a number of acts re-recorded their tracks for the same (latter) reason. I know that Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" on RB was new.

I quite like Long Face although it's not up there with their first few albums. Peace In Our Time would tie with No Place as my least favourite. It's all relative though. There are strong songs on both. Thought Stuart checked out on a high with Driving To Damascus. Plenty to enjoy on that one.

 

Applies for MANY Bob Marley songs. He recorded songs for Trojan Records and re-recorded them years later on Island Records. From "Lively Up Yourself" to "Kaya".

Agree! "DtD" was a nice return to form after the disappointing (to me) "Face".

I also thought "Buffalo" was a good bounce-back after "Home".

"Peace" is definitely spotty but I still like it more than "Home" or "Face"...

 

Apt timing: Taylor Swift just became the second artist with a re-recorded #1 Billboard country hit of her own #1 country hit, with "Love Story (F.U. Scooter Remix)." Swift's original version topped that chart in 2008.

Dolly Parton hit #1 twice with two different versions of "I Will Always Love You."

This of course applies generally to Jamaican music, as the popular style changed in the small musical scene of the island all the artists usually moved along with the shifts and it was very common to update popular songs in the new style, so you may have for example Ska, Rock Steady, Early Reggae, Roots Reggae, etc. versions of the same song, an example would be Justin Hinds & the Dominoes' "Carry Go Bring Come", which was recorded four or five times in different styles.

 

They also did Hurry On Sundown twice... once as Hawkwind Zoo and then redid it for their debut LP...

 

the Beau Brummels did it with “you tell me why” in 1965 and 1975
