We did a lot of R&D work but we would have production runs. We manufactured devices used in the refurbishment of the W-80 and B-61 warheads. Other runs like that. I always felt like I had job security working at the national lab because we wouldn't be able to outsource any work because of security. Good luck on the back side tool.

Funny that those warranty practices are illegal over here in the EU.
Some electronics brands tried to pull that off some years ago and failed.

Not a CD player, but I think the Schiit Modi 3+ DAC uses the AK 4490 and the Modius uses the 4493.

At the other end of the price spectrum, and an actual CDP, the Bryston BCD-3 uses the 4490.

Same here in Holland: almost no stock on entry and middle models. Higher end (3000+) has some stock, but might be pre-covid stock. Goes for cd-players and amps.

Also, what is available has seen some dramatic price hikes. Some amps like the PM8006 retail for 25% more then a few months ago.

I work for an audio / video company and the AKM fire was tough on the industry but there is a shortage and back order on many critical electronic components so don't be surprised if it is tough to get some gear for a while.

My CD player just started acting up. It was playing fine last night. I hope I can get another few years out of it before it kicks the bucket.

Or a fresh laser, those are easy to swap out in most cases.

That would be ideal. I REALLY don't want to get rid of my CD5004.

I'm VERY disappointed that Marantz discontinued the 5000 series. The CD6007 is expensive and I'll never use the USB port. I feel like I'd be paying for a feature I don't need or want.

Nah, those lasers just require careful handling, just like a cartridge/stylus on a turntable.
They plug in/out with a ribbon cable.
Some require a drop of tin to be removed to activate it, but even a 10 buck soldering iron will suffice.
However, don’t let the laser lying around after it’s activated - it becomes sensitive to ESD, so plug it in shortly after activation for good measure.
There are plenty DIY videos on YouTube about laser replacement.
Most lasers have a type number printed on somewhere so you can find a replacement on the web easily.

By far the hardest thing is to get a good deal - pricing for parts can vary heavily between sellers.

Have you considered Rotel? - A very good brand, on par with Marantz, IMHO. AudioAdvisor and MusicDirect have both become authorized dealers recently, and both stock them. Things do run out, but get replenished regularly.

BTW, I believe the CD6007 uses the AK4493 as well. FYI...

I just googled Marantz CD5004 laser replacement. $30. Not bad.

So far my player is holding up. Occasionally it will have trouble loading a disc. I'll hear it spinning for a few minutes before finally reading the disc. For some reason, it won't play a mint Tom Waits disc at all. So far, it's good 95% of the time. Fingers crossed.

I haven't considered it. I'll be sure to check it out. So far, I haven't felt good about alternatives to Marantz. Maybe Rotel will be the one!

LOL! I just bought a CD11 Tribute player from Audio Advice, which is also an authorized dealer, 2 days ago.

I had the same issue when shopping for an AQ Niagara 1200 after Christmas. MD, Crutch and AA all out of stock. Finally had them come available on Crutch after a few weeks in early Feb. Snagged one and they were out of stock next day. MD had them for a couple days later that week then gone. All 3 out of stock right now. Used ones getting top dollar.

This is true of most electronics manufacturers in the US. Warranty conditions generally include that the warranty is good only if the product is purchased from an authorized reseller.

"The Pro-Ject Audio Systems warranty is only valid for new products that are purchased from an authorised Pro-Ject Audio Systems retailer."

    Warranty – Pro-Ject Audio Systems

"Select Audio-Technica brand products purchased in the U.S.A. from an authorized Audio-Technica (A.T.U.S.) dealer are warranted for one year from date of purchase by A.T.U.S. to be free of defects in materials and workmanship."

    https://www.audio-technica.com/en-us/support/us-one-year-limited-end-user-warranty/

"Please note that our manufacturer's warranty applies to units purchased from AUTHORIZED NAD dealers only."

    Warranty FAQ

"Purchasing products from unauthorized Amazon retailers means you will receive no product guarantee, no warranty, no product service, and no technical support."

It was for me. Though I still have a Marantz SACD which I'll keep until it retires, when my "standard" Marantz CD player went kaput, I moved over to Rotel. Liked the build quality better and have encountered no issues.
