I know zero about Trip Hop. Found a CD in the rummage rack I really like, the promo sticker mentioned Trip Hop. Is this Trip Hop, or what? Would like to explore this further, figured consult the Mighty SHF Music Oracle. Any schooling appreciated! This is from the record I found: Fun For Me - Moloko
Surely if you were around in the 90s you heard this Portishead song - It was inescapable, especially on college radio. But it made it to alternative and adult alternative radio formats too.
Check out Tricky’s Maxinquaye and Pre-Millennial Tension as well. Not sure if they really qualify as “trip hop” per se, but Massive Attack’s Protection and Mezzanine are also just great electronic records from the same era. Here’s one I often hear on internet radio though I don’t know the group that well:
First 3 albums Blue Lines, Protection and Mezzanine are my recommendations. Amon Tobin is the other artist I’d recommend. Trip hop/nu jazz/drum n’ bass. He was huge in the late 90s but is rarely mentioned now for some reason.
"Trip Hop" my fave Electronica subgenre. It even influenced/involved major [at the time] artists. "BT ~ Blue Sky [featuring Tori Amos]": always got me spinning on the dance floor.
One problem is that many acts billed as "triphop" technically aren't triphop at all. Alison Goldfrapp could write a book about it. Her standard answer in interviews: "Do you actually know what 'triphop' is?"
People may [will] argue about this specific genre. Goth even crossed into Trip Hop IMO. Dark Wave & Synth Pop can also percolate w/Trip Hop. Dream with me: "Sneaker Pimps ~ 6 Underground"
Start with Portishead - Dummy, Massive Attack - Blue Lines and Tricky - Maxinquaye, and then check out these... Lamb - Lamb DJ Cam - Mad Blunted Jazz Kid Loco - A Grand Love Story The first three from Amon Tobin (mentioned above) are incredible.
Like others said start with Portishead - Dummy and Massive Attack - Mezzanine (I could do a thread Jon the greatness of the song Tear Drop alone) DJ Cam - Mad Blunted Jazz. Along the DJ Cam thing maybe try some of the DJ Kicks comps by Kruder and Dorfmiester and Thievery Corporation though some may call it downtempo but the trip hop and dub is strong in them and has other artists on them to check out. Maybe my favorite is the album by Tricky - Maxinquaye.
The remix of that tune was a massive club banger, I would say their record Walking Wounded has a strong trip hop vibe.
Early Hooverphonic. For this album they still used the bandname ‘Hoover’. https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPaztBWnatcjJCKhFViYFT85-con_Y3u6 2 wicky is the best known song of this album
