Yep Ronnie Romero sure gets around! Sunstorm was always a bit on the generic side for me but they do it well enough if one is looking for that. I like both Romero and Turner in general actully. Karlsson is also pretty active indeed :)

Saga is one of those bands it's easy to overlook but they have done some interesting stuff through the years.

Glad you liked those! Schenker is just playing great these days. I've seen him live a few times in the past few years and every time he absolutely killed it.

Yep it was a pretty good week. The Anchoress charted even higher in Scotland actually (#9). I've thought about including the Scottish chart too (which I also follow) but how many markets can I include which people on this site say 'don't matter' as it is :) ?

I'd be curious, at least. :righton:

Are there separate charts for Wales & Northern Ireland? Both have populations a lot smaller than Scotland's so they might not bother. Another interesting question (at least to me! :)) is, if Scotland has a separate chart, do their sales also get included in the UK charts?

I actually regularly go through quite a few other charts which I don't typically post for various reasons. I think you're the only person here who might appreciate more charts :)

Good questions on Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I'll tell you what I know:

The Official Charts Company compiles the data for the UK charts and publishes separate charts for Scotland and the Republic of Ireland as well. The UK charts themselves do include Northern Ireland and Wales but there's no separate chart for either of these. Scotland is the only one to both have its own chart AND to contribute to the UK charts themselves.

Though you didn't ask this, the OCC also does the compiling for the French charts published by the SNEP (Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique).

    Does that cover it?

    That's really interesting. Thanks! :righton:

I didn't know until this week that the UK has a dedicated rock chart, also compiled by the OCC. My cousin's first solo album came out a few days ago so, out of curiosity, I googled it and and found out it had gone top ten in the rock chart, which was a very pleasant surprise!

Yep the UK is one of very few countries to have a dedicated rock album chart and has had a progressive rock chart if you can believe that. The US, UK, Japan and Sweden all have dedicated rock album charts of one kind or another.

Congrats to you and your cousin! What album was that?

My cousin is Chez Kane. The album's self-titled and out on Frontiers Records. She's a decent musician & songwriter in her own right but this one's been put together by Danny Rexon from Crazy Lixx and she's added the vocals. Bit of an Eighties throwback but really well done.

Definitely. The bunch at Prog Magazine are very much involved in deciding what qualifies and have an ecumenical approach which I also share :)

    Nice one. Cheers! :righton:

This one reminds a little of FM. If I didn't know better, I would have expected a Steve Overland writing credit.

Her band, Kane'd are well worth a listen, if you're in the mood for a little retro rock with a modern sheen. It's Chez, her sisters Stephanie & Stacey along with four chaps, including the excellent Harry Scott Elliott on lead guitar.

Definitely an FM vibe on that one, yep. I checked out Kane'd when I saw the Chez Kane album actually :) They sound like a fun band for a night out.

On a related topic, what's your sense of how popular rock is by region in the UK? Which spots would you say have higher than average interest/crowds and which would you say have less? I'd love some good numbers on this but I haven't really seen any beyond checking venue sizes one by one for individual acts (which I have done a bit) so I'd be curious to hear from you what your thoughts are.

    Interesting question.

It seems to me that big bands playing larger venues get decent footfall all over the UK. On a more grass roots level - venues with 200 -1500 capacity - the north of England (Yorkshire & Manchester specifically) where I do a lot of my gig going, the scene is very healthy but South West Wales, where I spend the rest of my time, crowds can be a bit sketchy and venues open & close very quickly.

That's interesting and I was definitely wondering about those grass roots levels. Do you have any sense of why that might be? Are there areas where particular genres do better? Does metal have more of a toehold anywhere like Birmingham for historical reasons? Or prog perhaps? I wonder if there's anything left in Canterbury :)

I suppose local economics play a part, in South Wales, as well as a natural cultural conservatism. Rock covers bands still pull in a healthy crowd but their gigs tend to be cheap, if not free, whereas people will only got to see a original artist if they already know them.

There are a few exceptions, I wanted to see Red Jump Suit Apparatus in Swansea, a couple of years ago but the show sold out well in advance, however, at the same venue, there were sparse attendances for Karnataka, Urban Voodoo Machine and others that I've I've seen with healthy audiences elsewhere.

There was talk of a Canterbury revival fairly recently when Sid Arthur started to make a few waves. Don't know if it amounted to much though.

I'm lucky enough to know quite a lot of rock fans. Practically all my friends and a whole bunch of acquaintances, I'd say.

What's interesting is that we all have rock at the centre of the Venn diagram but we have very different tastes otherwise. I'm big into folk/acoustic, I know someone who listens to a lot hip-hop and modern country, another who loves ambient jazz, someone else who sings in a pretty extreme metal band but loves Seventies bubblegum pop and travels around Europe, in his spare time, to catch the latest incarnations of, say, Paper Lace or Chicory Tip and their ilk. I could list scores of different examples but we're all united by rock.
