David Marks - The Beach Boys - The Strange Brew
Around the 33:00 minute mark....
Always interesting to learn something new about something you thought you knew back to front.
According to this recent interview with David Marks, it is 'He', and not Carl that plays
the famous (or infamous) solo on 'Don't Worry Baby'.
It's been embedded into my brain forever it is nobody or could have been nobody, but Carl.
He also goes are far as to say he also plays on some other songs from Shut Down Vol.2

That would make the 'Shut Down Vol.2' wiki page incorrect too claiming David Marks is not on this album.
Shut Down Volume 2
The article also says he was a member til 1967, yet in the above interview, he said he was still an official
member til 1972.

I was led to believe Brian produced the 'DWB' session with Carl doing the overdub...
I'm sure I've read this countless times somewhere, maybe in a CD booklet...?
Maybe Carl tracked a solo, and Brian wasn't happy with it and had Dave come back in?

Anyway, I found this exciting enough to share...

Never would've guessed it was anyone other than Carl, but I can believe it. I have a harder time believing he was an active member for nearly a decade after he was canned/left, however. Though I did always wonder why they didn't just bring him back on after Murray himself was canned. Wasn't it Murray who kicked him to the curb?

Maybe because Dave had his own group by then, and probably still had the attitude of 'I don't need you, I've got my own band'.
As the interview progresses, Murry also tried to ban David's stuff being played on the radio in favor of his son's band.
You make a great point, why did it take so long to bring Dave back into the group throughout the 70's, 80's and ultimately most of the 90's?

It's a great book, and every Beach Boys fan should read it.
An updated version of it is supposed to be coming too...

Bringing Dave back was a wonderful touch for the 50th anniversary album and tour.

That's so interesting to me. I love that little solo and I've always thought David Marks seemed cool for some reason.

I love how he just does it so collectively and calm, 'Oh, that was me'.
He's done a few of these 'bombshell' moments now that make me enjoy his perspective and contribution so much more.

What a complete (and sick) prick Murry Wilson was.

He had his moments.
But without him, they would not have had a contract with Capitol Records.

I would be surprised if he played on it.
I wonder if he is getting a touch of Carol Kaye syndrome?

For me, it'll always be John Stamos.

David is on the first 4 Beach Boys albums. That’s a lot of material.

I don't get the point you are making. Don't Worry Baby is on the fifth album.

yeah, but the releases weren't coming out in strict recording order - i wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that this was done while david's time with the band was winding down.

no idea if it's accurate or not, but it strikes me as an odd thing to take credit for if it's NOT him? if anything, it might be a case where it's something brian had both carl AND david try at various times....but who knows.

it IS an impressive combination of 'effective' and 'simple!'

Hence why I said it could be Carol Kaye syndrome.

It's not uncommon for folks to claim they played on stuff they didn't, or mis-remember 50 years later.

On the other hand, I think it's fair to say that Carol Kaye played on a lot more sessions that David Marks ever did.

The "kind" interpretation of Kaye taking credit for songs she quite obviously could NOT have played on was that she was remembering "knock-off" sessions — that is, cheapo imitations of hit songs destined for budget, no-name LPs — and confusing them with the genuine article.

When it comes to Marks's memory, I don't see how you could put "Don't Worry Baby" in that category.

It’s been a long time. Memories get confused. There are often no accurate studio logs. People remember playing certain songs in the studio. Perhaps they ended up on record perhaps they didn’t. It’s like Carole Kaye swears she played on some Motown hits, where evidence suggests it’s unlikely. No one thinks she is lying, but most believe she is mistaken. As I said, it’s been a long time.

It's a fine example of "toes on the nose" rhythm guitar.

I'm sure that, on this forum, there'll be a lot of strong evidence that that was indeed the case!

Don't worry baby was recorded on January 7 of 1964. David had been gone from the beach boys for 3 months by then and
was concentrating on his band The Marksmen. Maybe he practiced the song with the beach boys in 1963 ? He claims he
was still a beach boy, but i think his name was on some contracts to make that claim. He could be on there, but it is questionable.
Maybe he overdubbed the part ?
