Thing actually works! Thank you KAB! With certain records if I turn the bass up all the way on the Loki it goes into one hell of a feedback loop. I can't seem to make that happen again now with the damper in place. I'll try some more but I think this is a real good tweak.
I'm glad you like the damper. It made an immediate improvement to my system too. I think it's only real competition for "best <$200 upgrade" is the VM95ML cartridge. If there's a list of no-brainer upgrades, these should be at the top.
I have TD-1000 installed on my SL-1210GR. I put all the silicone oil in the trough. Now I worry is there too much oil and will it spill over…
Correct. The instructions are pretty clear that you should not be putting in more than halfway up the trough in oil.
Jeez... I should check my silicon level... haven't even thought about it since I had it installed on my sl1200MK2 years ago along with a bunch of other mods by Kevin. Rather than ship my turntable, he let me make arrangements to drop it off with him... was a really cool experience getting to meet him and chat with him for a while.
The fluid is actually pretty stiff stuff, on mine I put just enough in that the node just touches it, so barely a third of the way if that. It works great this way, so my recommendation would be to use as little as possible.
Thank you all for your answers! Before I installed the damper I did watch this youtube video. The guy squeezes all the oil in the trough. https://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&rct=...=luu8x8GLu4M&usg=AOvVaw0hvVQYJhJ5vuP6p07DutES
Ehhh well, that thing in the video is not a KAB TD-1000 damper. Maybe it uses a less viscous silicone oil, or the paddle is shorter, or the syringe is smaller, or w/e reason there might be.
Boy I'm on the fence about my own TD1200. With it attached to my Technics SL1210M5G my playback sounds muffled and the top end is pretty dead. I suspect I had too much silicone in it (2/3 full). I'm going to play with the level for a while and see if there is a happy medium. I definitely do not like a dead sounding LOMC! Emptied out the trough and all the top end came back...
The silicone gel on mine is slowly spreading outside. It started with just a slight discoloration about a millimeter along the top outside on one half, now it's spread to about 3 millimeters along the entire top and back. I'm thinking of removing it before any of it gets on my actual turntable. Anyone else see this?
I haven't bothered with one but my concerns with issues like this is why I won't likely go near one anyway. I don't see the need with my GR and record collection in any event. Just one more thing that some people think they need to listen to records. What do I know, I don't use phone pre-amps or expensive cables and wiring either... Even my inexpensive library system seems to play vinyl well without add-ons or gimmicks.
It's only a 3rd full. What I think happened is a tiny bit got on top when I filled it and over time it's just slowly coating it. I think I'm going to remove it and see if I even notice a difference.
It's like attempting to solve a problem that may never It's like a solution to a problem I never had. I should have waited until I needed it. Here's an image of what it looks like. This was over a year and two months almost to the date:
So the goo has spilled over the side of the trough? Yikes! As to all these things that people on audio forums buy and recommend so enthusiastically, I'm skeptical of most "accessories" as being necessary.
