I'm really trying to think of a good example but having a hard time...are there any bands you can think of whose lead singer isn't even the best singer in the band?

    One possible example....

Wilco- John Stirratt has a beautiful voice, sweeter than Tweedy's, but Tweedy's lyrics only really sound right coming from the man himself. I would argue that John is a much better singer the Jeff.

Tom Fogerty was a much better singer than his brother John. But he admitted that John had a "sound". That was the basis of the Creedence sound.

Ian Brown from the Stone Roses, Reni the drummer can probably sing in tune better but hasn't got the correct sound.
I prefer Micky Dolenz on vocals to Davy Jones.
Whoever sang 'Song for Whoever' by the Beautiful South is a better singer than usual lead singer Paul Heaton in my book.I think it might of been the keyboard player?

I've always prefered Noel Gallagher singing his own songs.

WOW...that is pretty hard to take. "Burn" was a really cool song with Ian Gillan's vocal. thats unlistenable.

I loved his singing on the Jeff Beck Group records. He indeed has a beautiful soulful voice.

    ~The Who

Pete Townshend is my fave, but Roger Daltrey is great.

I love Pete's early solo stuff as much as The Who... and... after "The Who By Numbers", I live Pete's solo stuff more than The Who.

I prefer Townshend to Daltrey in The Who...

Mick Jones over Joe Strummer in the Clash (neither are great, but both are right for the music)...

Levon Helm sang more lead vocals in The Band than the other two singers, but I remember him saying that he considered Richard Manuel their lead singer.

You might like Pete better but according to the OP, you think he’s better than Roger?

I guess it's all subjective but I think John is a better singer than Tom any way you look at it. It's both a stronger voice and has more character..but like I said, very subjective with no right answer.
