Will we ever see a release of all his Marksmen material from the original master tapes?

    I don't know, I've gone all shy....

Okay, did The Beach Boys really back up Sam Cooke or were you mistaken?

  3. I haven't read his book yet even though I have it. So, the book might answer it but I'd like to know more about the dynamics of Murry and the Wilson boys, and David's interactions with Murry. Then, in potential contrast, what were David's parents like?

Based on your musical and financial history with the Wilson family (including cousins), including your firing in 1963, your signing away your royalty rights in 1970, and the 50th reunion and its aftermath, what is your opinion of each of them as people?

How about a guitar rig rundown and his guitar collection?
Here he is with a Black Strat.

    Which records did you have?
He is even photographed for the first 4 albums...
You must have had some later 'Best Of' type of thing or some 70's pressings and played on more....
    That would make sense then.

I went and looked and you're right, he is mentioned. I had Little Deuce Coupe, Beach Boys Party, maybe another, all in the 1960s. I always thought of the Beach Boys (which I rarely have since then) as the three Wilsons, Mike Love and Al Jardine.

By all accounts, Mike has been David’s biggest booster and true friend in The Beach Boys since way back in 1962. So the answers to these two questions are likely to be ‘Neither: he’s a great guy’ and ‘Never, but I often wanted to hug him’!

I knew who who he was. I just find a certain amount of irreverence is healthy. The thread title makes no concessions the reality that 99.9% probably don't know him.

It’s be good to know what work he did with The Beach Boys after he left - he was invited back shortly before Bruce left but declined after jamming a bit with them and appearing as guest onstage. There’s also a tape from a Dennis session in 68 where the person on the talkback addresses the guitarist ‘Dave’ and that could be him.

And also if he contributed any songs to the reunion album that didn’t make the cut - Mike mentioned co-writing a song with him.

Sorry the thread title bothered you. From my perspective I’m looking for people who DO know him and have questions. I didn’t intend this thread to be aimed at people who don’t know who he is. Hope that makes sense.

Just for the Hall of Fame fiasco, the downplay of Brian Wilson, and the downward spiral of The Beach Boys legacy, that’s slap worthy, even for those who were in the band...

It would be interesting to hear the reason(s) why he declined Mike Love’s offer (early 1971) to rejoin the Beach Boys.

Can’t see a guy who was bullied out the group by Murry in 1963, then pretty much forgotten/written out of the groups history until recurrent lobbying by Mike eventually brought him back into the spotlight from the 90s onwards caring about any of that stuff though.

From David Marks POV, Mike Love is a prince. It’d be like Cinderella slapping her Fairy Godmother!

The Rock Hall speech is legendary, in a revolutionary kind of way. Other artists have since used the Hall induction to take shots at their favorite targets in the rock 'n roll industry.

Disagree that Mike has ever downplayed Brian Wilson. Both artists sing each others' praises in interviews.
