A song that always feels profound to you no matter how often you've heard it?

This might be the greatest song about songs that I have ever heard. Hugh Prestwood's gorgeous melody and bittersweet lyrics can stop me in my tracks whenever I come across a version of it. Trisha Yearwood had a nice hit off of it and so did Alison Krauss, but I am now partial to Rumer's more recent version from her fantastic album that came out this past year, Nashville Tears; The songs of Hugh Prestwood.

"My Impersonal Life" - Three Dog Night

Brian Wilson said in a Beach Boys documentary that this song helped him get through some of the hardest times in his life. "As my friend Danny Hutton sang, 'Be still and know that everything's all right'."

    Worth a listen.

I'm pretty familiar with that song but I'll admit I never made the connection to the similar intro. However, it's a couple of notes then they go their separate ways. Take It To The Limit lyrically has a lot to do with it's affect on me.

I think this is profound... ‘Your Dad Did’ by John Hiatt... you can just feel this guy’s mid-life crisis.

”Well, the sun comes up and you stare your cup of coffee, yup...
    Right through the kitchen floor.
You feel like hell so you might as well get out and sell
    Your smart-ass door to door.
And the Mrs. wears her robe slightly undone...
As your daughter dumps her oatmeal on your son.
    And you keep it hid...
    Just like your did.

So you go to work just to watch some jerk
    Pick up the perks
You were in line to get.
And the guy that hired you just got fired,
    Your job's expired.
They just ain't told you yet.
So you go and buy a brand new set of wheels...
To show your family just how great you feel.
    Acting like a kid,
    Just like your dad did.

And you’re a chip off the old block...
Why does it come as such a shock
That every road up which you rock,
    Your dad already did?

Yeah, you've seen the old man's ghost...
Come back as creamed chipped beef on toast.
Now, if you don't get your slice of the roast,
    You're gonna flip your lid.
Just like your dad did, just like your dad did.

Well, the day was long now, supper's on.
    The thrill is gone...
    But something's taking place.
Yeah, the food is cold and your wife feels old,
    But all hands fold
    As the two-year-old says grace.
She says, "Help the starving children to get well...
But let my brother's hamster burn in hell."
You love your wife and kids...
    Just like your dad did.

A beautiful, warm, life-affirming song about coming to terms with ageing and death.

Why there aren’t more Guy Clark songs on here is a mystery.

I know in a way the lyrics aren't profound in the traditional sense but this song has to be be taken in context.

He was a rock n roll star first and foremost. Therefore although the message to the lyrics are pretty simple, my take is he just wanted people to take away the message that change for good in the world is possible through collective effort and acts of goodwill. Yeah you can analyse it thoroughly but in my opinion the message of the song is just one of goodwill to others, it may be contradictory from the writers point of view but after all it's a pop song with the double effect of creating a positive message and hope for humankind. ... this post might be considered profound.. although I have to say the lyrics are if taken relatively literally a bit ambiguous today

They don't quite go their separate ways. The slow waltz rhythm is the same though maybe TITTL is a bit slower. The lyrics are different, but the mood is pretty much the same.

Note for note would be plagiarism. That is not what I was saying, I said there seemed to be an influence by the other song, which is not plagiarism.

True but we can find that in about 50 percent of music within all genres. But I agree with your example.
