The Reprise is also missing 3 tracks from the UK Pye. The first four albums mastered from the analogue tapes by Kevin Gray, who mastered the mono box, are identical to the first four in the box. They are still available AFAIK. Some of those records were also released in versions from digital files, so you have to be careful if you want the mastered from analogue pressings. Discogs may be able to help.
You're probably right. The bit about stealing the cassette from the " nice " man who fixed the car confused me somewhat.
Oh Wow! "Holiday in Waikiki" from "Face to Face" is based on this! The drums, from the beginning. Then as the song ends, it suddenly goes into an instrumental jam of.... this!!
No, I used to use the library properly. It was a good time for me discovering music I’d not normally not have access to.

KINKS by THE KINKS Time for an overview ... There are some gems here but it's certainly an uneven ride. Maybe they were trying too hard. The Stones didn't "do a Beatles" and bring out a 14 track first album. They accepted that twelve tracks were enough. I think for this first album the Kinks should have made the same decision and jettisoned a couple of covers (I'll let you choose which ones) and concentrate thus more on original compositions. Among these originals, and with the help of hindsight, the most overlooked track at the time was definitely Stop Your Sobbing. And regarding this track, one important thing should be noted. Ray Davies met and married a northern girl during this period and her family were of Lithuanian descent. Two cultural barriers were nevertheless swept aside by the young lovers. And whatsmore Rasa Didzpetris, the girl in question and now Ray's first wife, adds the plaintive background vocal touches to this very song. She was to become a mainstay over the next few years. Years that many regard as Ray's most productive period. And it all started here on this very album.
I know on the original albums Rasa was never credited with vocals. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. If true, that's pretty crummy. She added a lot to some of the greatest songs ever.
Thanks, I don’t like it when dogs are trying to get in my back yard! But between karma and charitable donations I’d like to think I’ve done my time I don’t want no bald-headed woman!
Yes!!! I noticed that myself today when listening for the first time in many a year. Love finding little nuggets like this
Rasa’s vocal on ‘Death of a Clown’ is absolutely essential. Glad Ray & Dave had the good sense to use her as often as he did. Those vocals are very much missed in the 70’s and beyond
She certainly did. I wonder if she ever got payed. A friend of mine read a book about Ray and told me of his exceptionally, shall we say, frugal attitude towards money.
Phew i am in the clear then as i borrowed some rock books from a school library in 1986 and haven't returned them yet as scared of the late fee!
I Believed You I'm not sure if the guys were the Ravens or The Boll-Weevils when they recorded this track, but this was recorded on October 19 1963 at Regent Studios, before the Kinks name had been taken on. We very much have that early English beat sound here. I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me I believed what you said The lovin' days were through But you were fooling around I found somebody who, Will never never take your place Will never give me your embrace But now that you've shown your face You've broken her heart too. I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me Now what am I to do? Now that you want me so I just can't leave her blue Or else I'll be alone Well I just can't leave her now It wouldn't be fair somehow She loved me when my luck was down Now you've broken her heart too I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me Now what am I to do? Now that you want me so I just can't leave her blue Or else I'll be alone Well I just can't leave her now It wouldn't be fair somehow She loved me when my luck was down Now you've broken her heart too I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me I believed you I believed you Now it's up to me This is actually a Dave Davies track, and I assume Dave is singing, but I know you'll correct me if I'm wrong there. We have a fairly uptempo track that has nice interplay between the guitars, and some good harmony vocals. To me this is quite a promising opener for the band and it is really interesting that it is a Dave song to me. I guess Ray was just more prolific once he fired off with his writing .. I'll be really interested in input from the more knowledgeable Kinks fans about this stuff.
I Don't Need You Anymore This is one of Ray's early tracks, recorded in January 1964 at Regent. Again we get this uptempo thumping track, and really good unison vocal that carries a really good melody. Well I don't need you honey, 'Cause things just ain't the same. Since you've been going out with other fellas, Things have really changed. Well I needed you once, But now I'm standing alone. I don't need you any more. I don't need you any more. I don't need you any more. If I ever lost you, Then I will surely have died, That's what I thought. Things have changed a little, honey, Now I'm a wiser guy. Well I needed you once, But now I'm standing alone. I don't need you any more. I don't need you any more. I don't need you any more. Well I never thought that I'd love you again, But my luck has changed, now I'm free. I never thought that I'd love you again, But my luck has changed, now I'm free. I don't need you any more. I don't need you any more. I don't need you any more. I don't need you any more. Interestingly I personally would drop the two Bald songs and substitute these two tracks in, and the album is already a lot better.... This is a solid track to me... I don't have that much to say about this track really, but I reckon its a really good track.... and I am a bit bewildered as to why this isn't on the album ...
