    Sonny Rollins - What’s New - 180g LP - SCOTT NANGLE AUDIO

    from SnVinyl
    Pure Pleasure / RCA - LSP-2572 - 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl - AAA 100% Analogue

Audiophile Mastering by Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray at Acoustech

Limited Edition - Pressed at Pallas Germany

AAA 100% Analogue This LP was Remastered using Pure Analogue Components Only, from the Master Tapes through to the Cutting Head

Featured in Michael Fremer's Heavy Rotation in the June 2009 Issue of Stereophile!

Sonny Rollins' mid-sixties experiment with bossa nova was completely different than was Stan Getz “Jazz Samba”. Rollins stayed true to his bop and avant garde roots, using bossa nova as a surgeon uses a scalpel, to dissect and deconstruct familiar melodies and turn them into something new. This hip reinterpretation of standards is Sonny's trademark, and in this album it's uncompromising.

The whole album is interesting and highly original, but I will only comment on one cut, Rollins' deconstruction of a sentimental broadway ballad from "Camelot". He takes the kitsch out of this tune and turns it into a fierce meditation on the origins of jazz, the mystery of rhythm, and the fundamental particles of melody. Rollins' version of "If Ever I Would Leave You" is nothing less than this: one of the greatest tenor solos in the history of jazz.

No idea what it's like. Sounds as if it might be quite the theatrical challenge! Apparently the last two albums made with Christopher Braid are very good indeed. I'm currently quite enjoying the Downes Braide Association.

    180g Vinyl Double LP!
    Pressed at Quality Record Pressings!
    First Time On Vinyl!

For the first time on vinyl, Keep Movin' On is a 23-song collection that encompasses some of Cooke's best loved and most incisive songs. The album represents the artist both at the very pinnacle and, tragically, at the very end of his ground-breaking career. The songs that comprise Keep Movin' On were, for the most part, written and produced by Sam Cooke following his successful fight for complete creative and economic control over his recordings and repertoire. The notion of artistic self-determination was an unheard-of concept for virtually any recording artist, let alone a young rhythm and blues singer in the early 1960's. The album includes the Civil Rights anthem "A Change Is Gonna Come" and the title song "Keep Movin' On," which was recorded just one month shy of Sam Cooke's penultimate birthday.

Another great one! I have (had) a DOL pressing of Ain't That Good News, which obviously doesn't sound good, and have been meaning to get a proper copy to replace it. But this one has like 8-9 of the 12 songs from that excellent album, which means I don't have to. :) Nice to hear the sound is good, but even if it was just decent it would be a 5x improvement for me. :D

Strongly recommended for anyone that doesn't have that one, this is some of Sam's very best music even though it hasn't reached the popularity of Wonderful World, Chain Gang all of those. :righton:
