I very much agree with these two. In fact, I have always preferred Gary Duncan to the other guy (who normally gets all the praise). Jerry Miller is in a class of his own, and rarely gets mentioned.
Haven't read the entire thread but did a search and didn't find Glenn Phillips name, which is kind of shocking to me considering he was a founder of the Hampton Grease Band and has played with Lowell George, Bob Weir, and so many more. But I guess he then fits this thread. If I made a mistake and he's already been mentioned my apologies. Glenn Phillips (guitarist) - Wikipedia His monster first solo lp "Lost At Sea" was reissued awhile back and is easy to find. Lost At Sea
Not many acoustic players on here so: Bert Jansch (I’m not sure he qualifies as underrated but I saw Davey Graham mentioned earlier so who knows?) Michael Chapman Dave Evans Gwennifer Raymond Jack Rose (John Fahey fans should check him out) John Martyn (yes, I know he plays electric as well)
Wow can't believe these folks haven't been mentioned. All worthy. Gwennifer is one of my favorite new guitarists. Check out her YT videos if you get the chance. She's incredible. I'll add Bill Orcutt as well. His new album with Chris Corsano is fantastic, with a bit of Verlaine-ish magic thrown into an otherwise very original sound.
Jerry Reed was mentioned in the first couple pages of the thread - a long time ago. LOL! He was monster guitar player! Another, different Jerry, Jerry Donahue is a vastly underrated (perhaps that should be vastly unknown!) guitar player. Here's his version of "The Claw" (and other stuff!)
Not entirely unknown if you’re referring to the Jerry Donahue who was a member of Sandy Denny’s band, Fotheringay. I have his album ‘Telecasting’ and you’re right, he certainly could play.
Chris Brokaw. His new lp "Puritan" is fantastic. He's also lead guitar in the great group Come. Here he is with them from 2018
If you don't know much of Curt's work, witness a live verion of Up On The Sun, and you will have to re-rank your guitar heroes. Trust me.
I'll mention Tony (TS) Mcphee from the UK blues-prog band the Groundhogs here. Sorry if he's already been mentioned but if so he's worth mentioning again!
I would like to mention Lou Barlow as a guitar player he is always in the shadow of J.Mascis but at the Sebadoh shows which I saw I noticed he is an unorthodox but excellent player. Then there is Pete Cosey from my avatar, the rhythm king, playing in the bands of Muddy Waters and Miles Davis speaks for itself. There are so many relatively unheralded guitarists, I would take James Williamson or Dennis Coffey before bores like Clapton, Blackmore and most of the metal finger twiddlers any day.
Let’s hear it for some steel guitar players: Pete Drake Greg Leisz Sneaky Pete Kleinow Glen Ross Campbell Robert Randolph Lloyd Maines (father of Natalie)
I’d like to nominate Ed Wynne from Ozric Tentacles. I rarely hear his name mentioned when speaking of great guitarists. One reason I like him so much is that he adds exactly what is needed to the psychedelic songs of the Ozrics, he doesn’t just shoehorn solos in where they’re not needed. I guess a more rocking/flashy Steve Hillage would be an appropriate comparison. Here is the closing track from their latest album. Harmonic Steps
