oh man, that’s a classic 3.0 show. Effing Night Nurse. Just listened to that Gregory Isaacs album this week actually
7/3/11 Watkins Glen - Superball Set 1 continued: Ok, so after Wilson and Mound, A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing brought the heavy heat. We got legit Type II for about 3 or 4 wonderful minutes. Really terrific micro jamming (or whatever you guys call it). There was even a totally unexpected switch up where Mike went to a major key and the whole jam flipped on its head. Totally worth checking out. Very, very cool! Time Loves a Hero was nice to hear. Excellent version. Reba - ouch! Unfortunately this was maybe the biggest low point of this otherwise pretty cool set. The "tough" part was ok playing wise, but the jamming really didn't go anywhere. Ever wanted to hear a, dare I say, BORING Reba? No? Well too bad cuz here you go After the jam they did the whistle ending and Trey lost his marbles resulting in the whole thing grinding to a weird halt. I don't know if he just lost his place or had guitar problems or what but the song quite literally breaks down instead of ending, lol. At least that weird conclusion leads us into a TERRIFIC David Bowie!!! I'm not usually impressed with 3.0 Bowie's besides "oh that was hot!" but this one actually has proper jamming and not just soloing Not the greatest ever but it is totally a top-tier version for 2011 and lays total waste to that pathetic Reba
I've never done LSD (actually only done edibles a few times, and never at a concert) but yeah this is still pretty accurate.
Listened to this set recently. Love the ambient play before the big jam if you will. Its interesting how Trey ties it all together in the next day's Forbin's.
7/3/11 Watkins Glen - Superball Down With Disease> No Quarter (CRUSHING)> Party Time (HOSE. HOSE EVERYWHERE). Party Time might just be the best thing played at this festival so far. Yes, you heard me right. That is both a compliment to this performance and a bash at this festival EDIT: Nevermind, Ghost>Jibboo is just as hot or hotter!
Just finished night 3 of Superball. well, that DAAM tonight was a boatload of fun. The second set was nonstop greatness. The Makisupa > Night Nurse > Makisupa is one of my favorite moments from 2010, along with the Berkeley Cities. For early 3.0, you probably can't do much better than this show.
After a reprieve from the lengthiness of Superball, I move on to the rest of 2011. 8/5/11 George, WA A chiller vibe than usual tonight. Probably just start-of-tour jitters. Kill Devil Falls rips >The Wedge - very breezy, dare I say, but it builds to a hot peak Bathtub Gin - This was absolutely terrific. They slowly and patiently built it up, reaching the verge of Type II. Then Trey signaled a return to the theme and everyone slowly worked their way down to earth. Not a ripcord, but a perfect landing, I must say!!!!! Nellie Kane is Nellie Kane My Friend My Friend - ooh, a letdown. The song portion is pretty flubtastic by 2011 standards. It does reach the usual hot peak but this is not one to recommend. Cavern - brought back some energy. Rocked good and hard Taste - continuing the energy, but still with an underlying chill vibe. Extremely fluid playing from Trey. Great jam, again!!!! ROGGAE! - TYPE II AMBIANT JAMMING ALERT!!!!!!!! THIS is what we've been waiting for!!!!!!! I'm very much enjoying this set so far
I had no memory of the show from listening to it, but I checked my notes and I had it firmly in the "OMFG BEST SHOW OF 2010?!" category, lol
Just had set 1 of 8/5/11 interrupted to watch the incredible Peckinpah film "Convoy". If you like the Blues Brothers, this'll be right up your alley Hysterical and awesome. Back on topic, I resume the show now with Roses are Free
It definitely is like that, hence why I write notes. Otherwise I wouldn't remember pretty much anything, at least until you get way later in 3.0 I know I'm always posting about 3.0 stuff here, but I have an ipod classic loaded with my entire Phish collection from 1988 all the way through 2004. I am constantly listening to 1.0 stuff and soaking in things while laying in bed or reading a book or driving around town, but right now it's just bits and pieces, certain jams or renditions - not full shows. One of the biggest differences is how quirky 1.0 was - even through 2000 some of the setlists could be flat-out WEIRD. I don't wanna say 3.0 follows a set formula because they play a different set each night, but 1.0 is loaded with sets that have a distinct character just based around the songs played. Very interesting to compare. I'm sure you get what I'm saying - I suck at laying my thoughts out.
8/5/11 George, WA Rock and Roll>Meatstick THE GREATEST JAM OF 3.0 TO THIS POINT. PERIOD. END OF STORY. IF YOU HAVE NOT HEARD THIS WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE.
Not at all. I think you do a great job of conveying your thoughts as you listen. Your enthusiasm for some shows has sent me back a few times to listen anew.
Oh man, that's so sad. Loved his groove since I first saw solo Trey back in 2001. Obviously so different than Mike in every way, but I think that was also the secret sauce to keeping Phish and TAB so musically separate despite having the same leader and primary composer.
