And - in I think 1979 - a double bill featuring Del Shannon and Johnny and The Hurricanes (with Johnny Paris).

I may have mentioned this before, but I saw Harry Chapin in concert - not that long before he was tragically killed. He was happy to chat to fans afterwards and I was pleased to get his views on Phil Ochs ("I respected him because he never sold out").

James Brown at Hackney Ocean, London, 2002. He and his band played for 3 freaking hours non-stop. I was an energetic 20-something and my legs were sore by the end (dancing the whole time of course) yet James Brown was strutting his stuff like it was nothing. One of the greatest performances I've seen.

I should add INXS in 1991 for the X tour. It was an outdoor venue, a very hot night under the stars and Michael Hutchence's performance made it even hotter. Awesome band and an unforgettable concert.

I cannot claim having witnessed lots of 'A1' rock celebrities in person belonging to this category.
But here are some of the musicians who I really, really appreciated on those occasions, and the departure of some of them was a major blow:

Mick Karn († 2011) together with his ex-Japan bandmates Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri (plus ex-No-Man violinist Ben Coleman), backing up Italian singer Alice near Venice, 1995.
Simon Jeffes († 1997) with his Penguin Cafe Orchestra, 1996 'Concert Program' tour, same location near Venice as above. Curiously the band seemed to be having a bit of an off night onstage, but the long backstage chat I managed to have with Jeffes afterwards was nothing short of memorable.
Hector Zazou († 2008) - a 1999 concert in a, you guessed it, Venice church promoting his concept album 'Lights in the Dark'. One of the most beautiful concerts I've ever experienced.
Bill Rieflin († 2020) with King Crimson in 2019 in, wait for it, Venice's Teatro Fenice. Not an uber-connoisseur of his work but I totally loved his newly added keyboard parts then. One of the most powerful and exhilarating gigs I've ever attended.
