I see from another thread that you have the Masur-PentaTone SACD/multi-channel set. What do you think of that (especially from an SQ standpoint - I can listen to the Philips non-SACD versions on Spotify)?
Listening to "Rachmaninoff - Chopin Variations Op. 22 / Piano Sonata No. 1" performed by Zlata Chochieva on Piano Classics. 2012
Finally getting to a box set I got late last year, the New York Philharmonic 175th Anniversary Edition. Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27 Artur Rodzińsk New York Philharmonic The recording is from 1945, and the audio quality is very nice, a lot better than the recordings from the 20s and 30s. A very good performance as well.
Now playing: Thomas Weelkes - Madrigals & Anthems - The Consort of Musicke, Anthony Rooley - recorded 1994
First-Listen Tuesday Schulhoff Serenade, Op. 18 Brno State PO Yinon This work sounds like a pastiche of Haydn and Janáček. There are some individual touches here and there, but this isn't a memorable work.
On the turntable: Mahler, Zubin Mehta - Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra – Symphony Nr. 3 D-Moll London Records – CSA2249
Now Playing: Felix Mendelssohn - Symphony No. 1; Overtures "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "The Hebrides (Fingal's Cave)", etc. - LSO, Claudio Abbado - recorded 1984-1986 CD1 from the following box set:
First-Listen Tuesday Henze Violin Concerto No. 1 Ode to the West Wind Double Bass Concerto Wolfgang Schneiderhan, violin Siegfried Palm, cello Gary Karr, double bass Bavarian RSO English Chamber Orchestra Henze From this set: Basically, I just jumped into this set on a random disc as I didn’t really know where to start. One of the things I already like about Henze is his unpredictability and this is meant either stylistically or really what direction a certain work is going in.
Masur was an excellent Beethoven conductor and his Beethoven PentaTone box is excellent though I can only listen to the stereo since I do not have a HT setup ...
On the turntable: Tchaikovsky, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, Bernard Haitink – Symphony No. 2 "Little Russian" · Overture "The Storm" Philips – 9500 444
Now playing: Pierre Boulez - Notations 1-4; Rituel; Messagesquisse - Orch. de Paris, Daniel Barenboim - recorded 1988/1989
NP: Henze Symphony No. 6 LSO Henze I enjoyed the three concerti I previously heard, so now I’m trying my ears at a random symphony from within this set.
On the turntable: More Tchaikovsky with Haitink at the helm. Tchaikovsky, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, Bernard Haitink – Symphony No. 4 Philips – 9500 622
Another random selection: Henze Muses Of Sicily Joseph Rollino (piano), Paul Sheftel (piano), Rudolf Mauersberger (chorus master) Dresdner Kreuzchor, Members of the Staatskapelle Dresden Henze
On the turntable: Bartók - Perlman, London Symphony Orchestra, Andre Previn – Violin Concerto No. 2 Angel Records – S-37014
On the turntable: Bartók - Daniel Barenboim, New Philharmonia Orchestra, Pierre Boulez – Bartók Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3 Angel Records – S-36605
