Yeah, that sums it up for me.

Keith ran out of riffs sometime around then and that was that.

Voodoo Lounge has “The Worst” song which is actually the best song, and my favorite Stones song in the last 35 years. So, it can’t be that album. I would probably vote for A Bigger Bang or Steel Wheels, but even those have a few worthy moments.

Well, I mentioned it was my least favourite of the ones I've heard, although it's got a few songs on it I like.

Quite like both of those. There's a vibe going on missing on the other 'worst' candidates.

Those slagging Some Girls have no appreciation for disco, pedal steel guitar, cheap recording consoles, cramped studio space, instruments that bleed into one another, almost live takes, die-cut LP covers leading to lawsuits, lots of Ronnie Wood, laughter, joy and loneliness, and sex and sex and sex and sex, and the elusive "I want to be alone" Swede, Keith Richards. For shame, you dirty Jezebels.

That's how I felt when it came out. I remember a friend's brother bringing it home when it came out and we all gathered to listen and as I recall it was a kind of 'wtf?' all around.

The irony of course, for people who don't like it much, is that it might be the best 'Stones album for sound quality. At least that's what I remember SH posting about it. And the SQ on it is a world beyond the dull SQ of It's Only Rock 'n Roll.

I'm just going to go with the first couple.
Just me, I'd rather hear relatively lifeless originals than aggressive covers from this band. The Stones didn't become The Stones for me until they got adept at writing their own material.

  8. Got Live If You Want It is pretty bad. My buddies and I in my first band (in 1966 at age 14) were pretty unsophisticated listeners then, but even we were shocked at how bad it was. Except for Fortune Teller which we added to our song list.
Then a few years later I found out it was a studio recording with crowd noise added.
Satanic Majesties isn't too great either. Just because everyone else was making psychedelic albums didn't mean they needed to do it too.

I can’t listen to either Dirty Work, Bridges, Emotional or Some Girls all the way through.

The cassette SQ is good! I used to have that one on cassette and then I found the CD used for cheap at some point in the late 1990s. I think it's probably their 2nd best album released post-Tattoo You.

  13. Emotional Rescue is the worst album to me because the songs sound overproduced, too slick, and stale. "Let Me Go" sounds like a song from an 80s porno movie (and not a very good one at that). "All About You" is probably the best song on it along with "Dance Part 1". This album just sits in my collection and does nothing.

I like several tracks on Goat’s Head also, but you can really sense how unfocused the band had become post-Exile.

other than 'got live', which is just terrible, 'i find 'exile' to be a bad album.....take out 'tumblin dice' and its even worse.

sorry dellow stones lovers, i just do not like 'exile', never did, from day one, til today. and believe me i've tired it many a time, to no avail.

other than meatloaf's 'bat' in my opinion 'exile' is quite possibly the single most over-rated album of all time.

' Some Girls ' is overrated.
At least 'Emotional Rescue ' has ' Emotional Rescue ' , a great track.
' Bridges..' is a most worthy contender for worst album.

Will go with Satanic Majesties. Pretentious, contrived, tossoff arrangements, obviously psychedelic prostitution rushed out too late for the phony baloney hippie drug craze, album cover worth more than the music within, sounds like it was recorded in a garbage can in a bus station restroom. I love it.

Yes...it is #1 of the Top Ten Worst Stones Albums.
Your avatar , the poster which came with ' Goat's Head Soup ' , should have been that album's cover.

Have all the studio discs and have seen the band five or so times, but don’t actually consider myself that big of a fan (?).
Having said that, Satanic is pretty dire, IMO. And I never warmed much to Black and Blue, but Bridges to Babylon would get my vote. Hand of Fate redeems B&B immensely, but Bridges just sounds like parody Stones to me...

I love both of those albums, but yes, this thread is just an organised scrap. And people will weigh-in with Satanic Majesties (I don't care what Jagger feels) or Dirty Work without ever hearing even them (or listening to them perhaps - with Dirty you just have to get with their production then it all falls into place).

EDIT (having now read the whole thread) - stunningly it's Some Girls that people keep dropping!!! Sign of the moving times maybe, there's always a classic album to slag off.

The one I struggled with the most actually surprised me, their hit blues cover-album from a few years back, Blue and Lonesome. It's not terrible of course (how could it be?) but is just so heavy without enough all-round consistency and intensity. It's like Jagger is emoting for the guitars at some points. Too much whooping at times too. It doesn't compare at all with the tracks that got onto Exile imo (ie their own natural cherry-picked blues), but was a smasharoonie all the same. Steel Wheels, Bridges to Babylon etc - not classics but all decent-enough albums in my view.

So I suppose the only one I can't see the need to play again in Blue and Lonesome, and some of their later live albums I guess. But of course Blue and Lonesome doesn't have their original songs. I don't know if they'll ever write any more originals now, but they are a fantastic act, one of the top-tier true all-time Greats. In some ways even the best, imo.

Bridges To Babylon is the only Stones studio album that I heard once and had absolutely no desire to hear again*, so I guess I'll go with that. All of the others had something to keep me coming back...usually a lone killer track or two (Hand Of Fate; Sad Sad Sad and Rock & A Hard Place; the two big singles on Tattoo You; etc.).

I used to love Voodoo Lounge a lot more than I do now, but I still maintain that it has some killer pop melodies. It's the only post-It's Only Rock & Roll album that I revisit with any sort of regularity.

*I've never made it through the entirety of a live Stones album.

For me it’s Goats Head Soup. They put out 4 of the greatest albums ever, bam bam bam bam, and then comes this pile o’ crap?
