Were tracks from Gilmour’s eponymous album ever considered for a Pink Floyd release ?

I’ve always wondered whether Gilmour ever presented tracks from his first solo album to the other members of Floyd as possible material ? Tracks like ‘There is No Way Out Of Here’ & ‘I Can’t Breathe Anymore’ always had a very Floydian style and would have been perfect for further development within the band.
Anyone have any info on this ?

David didn't write "There's No Way Out of Here" so he wouldn't have been presenting it to Pink Floyd.

People either forget this fact or are unaware of it. Gilmour produced the album Too Many Crooks for the band Unicorn in '76. He heard the song and liked it so much that he ultimately recorded it himself. And improved it immensely as you can hear from listening to the original.

I always listen to it as if it was a PF glorified demo from Gilmour. I know it isn't but it has such a Floydian vibe, it would have been a good PF album, especially after adding Rick's textures.

I always liked the Unicorn version. But David’s version is improved and I do like it better.

Some of it sounds like 74-77 PF. Signs of Life and Comfortably Numb are of course from that general era.

In my "what if" list of music possibles, I wonder what if both this album and Rick Wright's "Wet Dream" solo album had instead been offered to the band, leading to a Pink Floyd album that wouldn't have been The Wall, and to Rick staying in the band.

I have read interviews with Waters saying that Gilmour and Wright both kept the material to themselves that led to their respective solo albums, rather than offering it as the basis for songs to be worked up for Pink Floyd

Love Dave's first solo album ... I think it may be the most Floyd-like of all the solo albums...

I agree, but I think there's still some possible Floydian aspects to About Face with tracks like Until We Sleep, Near The End, All Lovers Are Deranged and Let's Get Metaphysical.

Fair complaint on Roger's part, but I wonder if at some point, neither Dave or Rick wanted their material to end up as songs about WW2 lol.

Thanks for posting this. Great track.
I like this version too but it’s right up David’s street. :righton:

I like the original as much as Dave's version, sometimes even more. It has that just right downbeat mood (not that Gilmour made it more cheery...). "Too Many Crooks" is a great album.

As much as I love Roy Harper "Short And Sweet" was not improved when he recorded his version for "Unknown Soldier" two years later. But at least Andy Roberts got a gig as a surrogate Floyd member for the later "The Wall" tour (replacing Snowy White) when Gilmour heard his playing on that track.

He didn't have to tweak "Raise My Rent" too much to get the guitar part for "What Do You Want From me?", did he?

Yup. I had heard Pulse years before I'd heard David Gilmour, and my mind was blown the first time I heard "Raise My Rent".

    • Mihalis
    • Against The Odds

    • Pink's Song

    • I Can't Breathe Anymore
Let's say the label wanted a new record that year but Roger was still busy writing The Wall so David and Rick got a chance to breathe a little...

I do love this song and it does sound like a song that might have been written and performed by Pink Floyd.

Video featuring the heartbreaking whale that's been alone in a bathtub for over 50 years . Sorry humans haven't been better to you, Lolita.

From Wiki: Lolita lives alone. Recall that orcas are highly social animals that usually live together for life in multigenerational family groups. Since Hugo's death in 1980, she's lived alone. ... After Hugo's death, the Miami Seaquarium required Lolita to continue performing without her companion.

Interesting. I hadn't known where that song came from. Gilmour's a much more expressive singer than the guy in Unicorn, but he didn't really change the arrangement all that much.

I was so disappointed "There's No Way Out of Here" was not written by himself

Well there wasn’t a lot of room for their material, though, was there? By 1973-74, they’d mostly developed the material that would appear on their next two albums Wish You Were Here and Animals, and then Roger presented demos for both The Wall and Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking at the same time and asked them to choose which project they wanted to do next after Animals. I’d guess Rick and David probably felt like their song ideas were surplus to requirements.

Didn't one of those songs become the basis for the track of Dogs or another song on Animals?

I think Mihalis has a bit of the same strumming pattern as Dogs/Gotta Be Crazy does at one point and Deafinitely sounds a lot like Sheep/ Raving and Drooling. But I think those songs were written at least a few years before Gilmour's solo album came out. I think Short and Sweet kind of resembles Run Like Hell and the end of Sheep, just somewhat similar chords.
