what's with the "absolutes"? and did you miss the part wherein petty was asked a "question"!? you must have. i get it. you're bored too and being contrarian just to stay awake. if so? i get it. i also do that sometimes.
exactly.. and petty never swiped. which reminds me of the old adage - never mix a donkey with a swipe.
Oh being "contrarian." Sure thing. So this was supposed to be a Tom Petty Appreciation Thread. Got it!
I used to think "Imagine have Huey Lewis & the News as your favourite band." I could understand thinking they were ok, maybe (at a stretch) buying one of their albums, certainly not throwing the radio against the wall when they cam on, but having them as a favourite band, as several people at my high school did in the late 80's, was utterly perplexing.
" Throwing the radio against the wall " lol, there not my cup of tea but I never thought about doing that.
Sadly, I thought that Tom came across as a bit of a knob in the Warren Zanes biography, and this little contretemps reinforces that notion somewhat. It's not going to stop me enjoying his music though. I can cope. I'm a Graham Nash fan. Don't know a vast amount about Huey Lewis' music. However, I did recently pick up a copy of Sports recently and it's a real corker. Definitely up for hearing some more of his albums as & when I stumble upon them.
In general, forumites who are unable to make sensible judgements about the difference between personal taste and consensus amongst music listeners, musicians and critics on "greatness" of artists are not worth engaging with. It's heads and brick walls.
You stated it perfectly! 80s CHR was a major reason I stopped listening to the radio. Simply dreadful.
Go back through the thread. Find one person who acted as if the comments were offensive, outrageous or that Huey was a sacred cow. He just sounded like a smug, self-important jerk.
"The topic" was TP's comments about HL. It developed into other areas from there, as people remarked about each musician's place in rock history. There's been a lot of discussion outside of "the topic". Anyone can "pop off" about whoever they want. You can take their comments however you want. And TP's comments weren't about HL's technical singing abilities - TP remarked that he simply thought HL made "musical product" and he didn't come across as a singer who sold what he sang. TP's own talents are irrelevant in this domain...
TP was asked his opinion about HL. He answered. It's not like the interviewer asked him about how he wrote "American Girl" and TP said "I'll tell you about that after I talk about how little I think of Huey Lewis". And TP doesn't seem upset. He's not emotional or angry or indignant. He just doesn't think much of HL's music. Big deal!
He. Was. Asked. Could he have demurred? Sure. But TP didn't go out of his way to comment on HL. He responded to the question!
But since Sonic Youth never had hits, doesn't that title imply... hits are for squares, so if you like SY, you're cool?
Which original CD? "GHV2"? It's available all over the place in the US - as are "Hotel CA" and "Long Run"...
I'm not gonna re-read 18 pages but there's been an awful lot of offense taken by obvious fans of Huey Lewis. Much too much overly defensive reaction...
Nobody said that he couldn't pop off. This thread is likewise an opportunity to express opinions on him!
That was determined long ago. Then the question is why what he thinks matters? The fact that he thinks it's extremely important is obvious in his voice. Only surprise is that the interviewer didn't try to track down Huey with "Did you hear what Tom Petty had to say about you?" to create controversy. Maybe he did!
