I just received the Japanese CD of Beck's Hyperspace (2020) and was surprised and charmed to find it was packaged as a 7" single, with the CD mounted on a 7" cardboard disc.

I was wondering what other examples there were of one format being packaged as if it were another.

From my own collection, I can think of E.A.R.'s Pocket Symphony, a CD-sized vinyl disc:

21 Beggars Banquet, a promo-only complete cover of the Rolling Stones album, issued to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the label of the same name. This was a CD masquerading as a vinyl album (the disc mounted on a board inside a gatefold cover):

And there's the bonus cassette that came with Numero Group's wonderful Scharpling & Wurster box set, which turned out not to be a cassette at all, but a USB pretending to be one:

    What have you got?

what's the point? Oh yea, faux vinyl...damn, they sure know marketing...what about the people that can't stand vinyl and have to be stuck with a 7" waste of space that doesn't fit on the CD shelf...after all one is buying a CD not not a 7" waste of plastic....pointless.

I really like the Japanese mini-lp 'vinyl replicas' but I have to agree with Michael, I don't see the point in excessively large packaging with no extra content. It's the same reason why I dislike these oversized box sets (some don't even fit on normal book shelves). If I want a format to mimic another I'd like it to be scaled down to the size of the format that it actually is.

I imagine lots of people bought this

only to find when they opened the box, instead of a nice tie and handkerchief, all they got was a bloody vinyl album.

The Damned's "Alone Again Or" cd single released in 1987 was in a regular 7" sleeve with the cd held in an extra large holder inside the sleeve.

Not fitting on one of my CD shelves would suck.

Japan has done that a fair amount over the the years. I bought a Def Leppard Hysteria in the 90's, mainly hoping it had Ride into the Sun or rRng of Fire on it.

I have a few 7" sleeves with CDs inside. I also have a 1LP and 3CD set inside a standard 2LP gatefold sleeve - the CDs are slotted into a 12" square piece of card.

I have plenty of titles that do not fit on my CD shelves because of odd packaging.

That's a great example, and it reminded me that the original die-cut sleeve of New Order's 'Blue Monday' was designed to look like a giant floppy disc:

I'm always amused at a new purchase of a 4.0, 1970's quad recording from Dutton Vocalion, that comes to me on the same medium I used to find even higher-quality 5.1 mixes of albums that still may have been 2 or 3 decades older that the purchases I'd made in the 'aughts.

Pull it off the card and stick it in a cd jewelcase. And then throw the packaging away if it annoys you so much. No one is forcing you to buy it, and it comes in standard format cases too.

Here's one. A single masquerading as a CD.

    GoodiePal's Mort Aux Vaches

Inside this yellow foam-rubber double folded CD case (with brass split-pin paper-fastener through the middle holding the inerds in place):

    you get your CD :
