Shaft was the template for more 70s themes than I care to know. But this one actually looks interesting (never watched it). Thanks. It's a crime investigation series (2 seasons) told in a Rashomon-like style. Got an Emmy in '75 for editing. Episodes are up on The Tube. Here's the first:

Read something somewhere where someone said you could see Stanley Kubrick's face in the clouds in this fantastic opening. Not seeing it myself.
The theories about hidden and not-so-hidden visual messages in this movie, including the doc, Room 237, sometimes verge on the ridiculous. Just ran into The Wendy Theory. They don't stop coming!
Could be an age thing but I prefer the original. When Kevin McCarthy returns to the cave and embraces and kisses Dana Wynter only to discover she's 'changed' is one of my favourite movie scenes. The dead look she has in her eyes is chilling.
The opening sequence from the original (1988 - 89) "The American Experience" on PBS is among my favorites for television series. They would revamp this every few years and with a similar tone. But I always liked the original best.
PBS has sponsored many programs (too many to mention - and harder to find samples!) with really unforgettable themes/opening credits over the years.
The neon colored squares in block patterns; the horn punctuated disco rhythms... in fact, BOTH themes were composed by John Carl Parker! His CHiPs treatment -
