as far as the actual songs and you assume that your preference is in line with everything/everyone else and the masses agree. pink was good but overrated.
I nominate Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols (1977). I think the sound, the playing, and the song material are impeccable.
Of the established greats I’ve probably listened to KoB the most but it is an impossible question. I think the Louis & Ella albums are a high watermark, Steely Dan have been consistently great also. I believe Frank Sinatra ‘sings for only the lonely’ is pretty perfect; my head is now spinning.
it is. and i love ok computer. but also automatic for the people. and the beatles. and the cure. the pixies. other artists for random but real reasons. this thread should self-destruct
Objectively and strictly musically this is a totally imposible question to answer. It would be far easier to "tackle" which album was the most influential even if it's not ones favorite album of all time. For this, far as Pop/Rock is concerned and for the last 60 years or so, a prime contender would be Sgt. Pepper. Not because it has the greatest or even the most influential songs (it doesn't, IMO). But because it influenced the *importance and presentation* of "the album" more than any other (arguably). And again, this applies strictly to Pop/Rock. Albums from other artists/genres are equally influential..
I don't think there is such a thing as "objective best album of all time" How do you balance off the amazing variance just in Jazz.... the stunning breadth of variance in pop or rock... then country, rap, classical.... There is no objective way to measure albums against each other
I never understood the hype for Sgt. Peppers. "Thriller" is killer, musically. Although its songs are all over the map, (not in terms of quality, but in style) yet the album feels consistently strong all the way through.
This is literally an impossible question to answer, as others have already said. Taking everything into account there must be hundreds of albums, across every genre, that could fit the bill. And there are intangibles at work that mean two albums can sound very similar on the surface, but be miles apart in terms of feel or quality or soul or whatever. Music's not a competition.
My choice too - but honestly? Really this is too hard to answer because there are just so many genres and also personal preferences at play. I would also say Madonna "Like A Prayer" and Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" Amy Winehouse "Back to Black" where do you stop and start?
I can think of three easy choices. A toss up between More Than A New Discovery, Pet Sounds, Rubber Soul. Laura Nyro, The Beach Boys, The Beatles. Three artists that had more than a few perfect albums.
It seems to me that the objective greatest album shouldn't have singing that is a possible turnoff to many (Neil, Joni & Bob), and shouldn't be too devoted to one style/sound/mood because that would pigeonhole its interest. Therefore my 2nd choice would likely be The Beatle's White Album because I feel like it has something for nearly everyone, even Grandma.
oh there are some questions. about the quality. three of the nine are shaky. and i love the best parts of michael, but when one third of an album is cheese, it can’t be any best album. baby be mine. the girl is mine. the lady in my life. velveeta. cheese.
