Hmmm...I do disagree. One man's padding is another man's just enjoying them getting into the groove. I think side 2 is faultless and have no issue with the longer sections.
I'd like to think that you could dislike some work of art but objectively recognize how it's successful on its own terms, or enjoy something but recognize how it really is a piece of cheese, but I doubt that anyone could say that any album is objectively the best of all time. Nothing can be all things to all people.
Hard thing to comment on but I think John Coltrane / Johnny Hartman on impulse could give this a good run for it’s money. I’ve been surprised how many people have really connected to it ... without being into any particular music style too heavily.
Ella & Louis is the best album by the best singers with the best band. That is objective. Subjectively, A Foggy Day is its best track.
Objectively.....Koyaanisquatsi Best album is always the current one you are listening to.....Toy Matinee.
I spoke with a higher being and it told me objectively speaking the greatest album of all time is the sound emitted by an imploding star. Unfortunately no one can hear it because there’s no sound in space.
I just checked it out and I see what you mean, although I wouldn't mind if someone gave it to me. But "Search And Destroy" is dad rock??? One of the strange things about getting old is seeing creative work that was almost universally either ignored or despised when it was new become elevated to the status of classic.
My choice as well. It takes up more space than any other piece of music. Ergo it is objectively the best.
I just knew this would happen. Sometime after posting my list of probable "best albums ever," I realized I failed to list one. An important one (for me). The Who Sell Out. It was my first Who record, purchased about a month after I saw them play in Fargo ND (November '67). The show was beyond description but there were some songs on the album I didn't care for at the time (1st semester h.s. senior, not sure what that was all about!). But for the past 45+ years it's been one of my go-to favorite albums. I hereby nominate Sell Out as one of the "best ever." It wasn't that long ago (figure that out in Covid months) that I bought the album's 50th Deluxe edition, and I finally just ordered the re-expanded box set, pricey but, hey, The Who was the first band (other than local) I ever attended (along with an estimated 250-300 "crowd"). Long live The (original) Who!! By the way, NO, I cannot provide just one, "the best," so add this to my dozen previous suggestions. It's what happens when you get old.
