Concerts were better when microphones were wired.

Old man alert. I was watching "The Song Remains the Same", which could have been a great movie if it didn't want to make a "statement". We had to wait for "Stop Making Sense" for a director and band to figure that out.

Anyway, Robert Plant knew how to work a mike. I was lucky to see Rod Stewart in his prime with The Faces and it was amazing what he did with a mike stand. Mick, Roger Datlrey, Freddie Mecury, all the great worked the mike.

Apologies in advance to Ms Turner but I always get a twinge when seeing her work it in "Gimme Shelter"

 

Concerts were better when musicians played and singers sang and you got what you got without electronics in the middle to fix the mistakes or punch in tracks.

The wired part of the microphones isn't the issue.

I assume you're talking about live albums? They were totally futzed with in the 70s. Song Remains the Same is very guilty of that. Heck every live album has punch ins.

 

Personally I think concerts are better when the audience is wired.

Can you imagine Roger Datlrey going on stage with a wireless mic but he didn't notice till he throws it?

 

Madonna would not be able to sing (barely) while running around if she used a wired mic. A wired mic is not a guarantee against lip-sync or autotune.

 

i always thought that was kinda odd, but after looking at that pic i think it's so he didn't have to keep raising his hand up/extending his arm for contestants etc to talk into the mike
i guess i still think it looks kinda odd

 

I don't think a performer being tethered to one place ensures a great performance. When Kate Bush decided that a wireless microphone and a custom made headset cobbled up from a wire coathanger was needed to express herself via dance...it changed live performance forever.

Wired or wireless mic, it doesn't matter to my mind. It's not the only characteristic to take into account to make a concert sounding better. More precisely, there are even many other characteristics that are worth taking into account.

 

Some big name guitarist still do hard wired gigs for TONE reasons(Edge, Eric Johnson, EVH?). Once runways and crowd mugging enter the picture it's usually wireless.

There's a couple big name singer who still go wired. Visual, tone, or even sound signal integrity from drop outs.

As for the general question in the thread title, it's an old man yelling at a cloud.

I miss when this forum was conducted via telegraph. Now there was a wire.

 

And worse! When reading the forum on my tablet it's WIRELESS!!! I don't know what the world's coming to. Pretty soon those horseless carriages will be everywhere, radios in every household...

Not just the singing but also the stage act. I remember seeing black oak Arkansas and the singer Jim is a graceful frontman. He got himself electrocuted in the microphone but he went with it looking like it was a part of the act. Love the show!

 

Concerts were also better when there wasn't a choreographed complex multi-color light show constantly going.

 

There were gaps in the filming of The Song Remains The Same, so they came up with the goofy fantasy sequences.

David Lee Roth was another one who used a mic stand as a prop. Steven Tyler too.
