Never looked at that as a combination. It was always Blackmore and Lord for me. Both playing off each other and one would hold down the rhythm whilst the other one went off on a solo .

Dave Gregory/Moulding might be more appropriate. However, Moulding sure does melt into the being of their music. I hadn't even thought about it until you posted that.

That would be, Jerry Garcia and John Kahn, if they haven't been mentioned already. Well maybe not as a duo that often, but 25 years together is a long time also.

Fair point. At the end of the day, the musician with whom Holdsworth was most simpatico was drummer Gary Husband.

I would say what Roger Glover did was to drive the band along and give Blackmore (and Lord) the space to do those solos. Great, quietly unassuming but vital to the sound musicianship which made it a fantastic combination. It's no coincidence that Blackmore later tapped him up in Rainbow years after their Deep Purple days.

He was a solid bass player that’s for sure. He didn’t need to be flashy because there was enough of that going on elsewhere in the band.

  25. Gary Green and Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant). And when they play acoustic guitars together, it’s also another level. Airtight.
