"One L" probably can stand toe to toe with "Wafflehead"...

'Narcissus' is one of the highlights of the reunion. 5/5. I have no idea why this didn't kick off Sides One or Two.
When I relistened to Luxor recently I remembered my initial reaction was "oh, it's like Eye without the highlights."

I think we're in a bit of a "heads down, let's plough through this together" phase of the thread / career.

Today's song is "Disconnection of the Ruling Class", written by Robyn Hitchcock (lyrics and music), Kimberly Rew, Matthew Seligman and Morris Windsor (music). Produced by The Soft Boys and Pat Collier.

    Robyn Hithcock: vocals, guitar
    Kimberly Rew: guitar, vocal
    Matthew Seligman: bass
    Morris Windsor: drums, vocal

I don't think RH is much of a fan but this is his most Rolling Stones-like song since Rock'n'Roll Toilet. Specifically, it sounds as if was inspired by Honky Tonk Women and I love it's swagger and attitude. It's another one which is far better than several on Nextdoorland.

The lyrics are delightfully off-kilter too. I've no idea why Slade and two of their members are namechecked but I guess it's fitting with Noddy Holder having turned 75 yesterday.

Unfortunately in the UK in 2021, the ruling class are as disconnected as ever.

Disconnection of the Ruling Class 4/5.

4.5/5 for Narcissus, it's great and should have opened one of the sides of Nextdoorland.

3.5/5 for Disconnection... a bit plodding.

Disconnection -- yes, it plods too much with no variance (which, admittedly, RH leans on a lot and those are usually not my favorite types of his songs...) 2/5 -- though it would have fit better on the main album

    Narcissus - 4.5/5 - Should've been on the album.

Disconnection - 3/5 - Like a bunch of Robyn's tunes from this time, it starts out promising but then never really goes anywhere. Pleasant, not essential.

I really like "Disconnection of the Ruling Class" and think it'sa near-classic. It doesn't really sound particularly "Soft Boys" to me, it's rare that they get into this kind of sexy groove, but it totally works.

    Lyrics.

Luscious guitars, of course: this is something that I think comes off better than Robyn's solo version mainly because the Soft Boys do this kind of electric mysterious English folk thing so well. It is more a slice of atmosphere than a full-fledged song, but I like it for being what it is, no more no less.

The thing that strikes me about Side Three is that it’s much more representative of the stylistic range that was always one of the hallmarks of The Soft Boys than its parent album. Which is probably why my idealised Nextdoorland is more like Side Three (Expanded Edition).

It's a really good song but I prefer the folk version on Mossy Liquor as the band don't really add too much to it.

Each of Her Silver Wands. 3/5.

Wands - much better than the Robyn solo version, the guitars and harmonies sound great again. This would make my playlist too! 3.9/5

Good on all of you for sticking with this to the end! While there are some of the later albums (Ole Tarantula, s/t) I enjoy, it gets a little harder to have a strong opinion on most of this material for me.
