I've been having a hard time tracking down much info on this. It looks like the album was re-issued by Ace Records in the UK in 2014. I emailed them a few weeks back to see if this was analog or digitally sourced, and finally heard back that it's from a digital source. Has anyone listened through this to compare to one of the early Flying Dutchman pressings. Was really hoping to grab one of those, but the prices are through the roof.
Worth noting that the 2014 is cut from a 24/96 transfer from the analogue master. It sounds great. Shouldn't be hard to find as it is still in print and will continue to be so. There will be an all analogue cut done this year to celebrate the album's 50th anniversary
An analogue wax of this would be fantastic. Count me in. I have the cd from the box, but the vinyl will be better.
That is great news if true. It's one of my favourite albums but the originals are out of my price range at the moment and I didn't want to settle for a digital version
It's definitely true Check out the Ace Records Facebook page/ Instagram, or probably Twitter and you can see the tapes freshly landed in London, and their next step will be a trip to the mastering studio next week.
Here's the Insta post: Ace Records on Instagram: “Master tapes for Gil Scott-Heron's "Pieces of a Man" just in from California this morning. Look out for a very special AAA project later…” Can't wait
Will this be flagged up everywhere when it's imminent? I'd be really upset to miss this if it's a limited release!! If Ace knock this out of the park they will take their place amongst gods
... so was the rough trade exclusive a repress of the 2014 or is that the AAA one referenced earlier in this thread? confused.
Heard back from Ace today when I asked on FB if there are any further details and they've said; "It may end up being a double for better sound!" That's all I know
Big fan of Gil and POAM. Until this new one comes out, I'll have to make due with my US 1971 Flying Dutchman original, noisy and all.... cheers,
Holy schiit preamps. That would be my most anticipated release of all time if they do that. It's a long album that would benefit from the 2x45rpm treatment.
There has been a problem with lacquers due to the length of side two and we’ll be making a decision this week.
I'll assume you're with Ace and thanks for the info! Do you mean there is a problem sourcing lacquers or do you mean the length of side 2 makes it hard to cut a faultless single 33rpm disk?
Count me in as a buyer! Been on a Gil Renaissance of late, after discovering The Archives Tribute to Gil and Brian Lp. Carry Me Home. .. ... Most excellent! and that got me to pick up that "last" XL recordings of Gil solo, Nothing New, also most excellent. Can't wait for this 'new' Pieces Of A Man! Thanks!
Yes, a lovely "Spartan" Record. Highly recommended for Gil fans of like persuasion. Very intimate and personal.
