Linda's favorite digital versions of all Black Sabbath albums

  1. On the other hand, Rhino obviously used a Sanctuary 2012 remaster series for their 2014 HDtracks and 2016 CD releases, so somehow the division between Europe and America doesn't always seem to matter.

Five years have gone by, and don't forget, who sits in the office of the license department.

  3. Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. What has changed in those 5 years regarding the market division Europe vs. America? Who is sitting in the license department, and how does it matter?

The rules may change! Record companies do not have “laws”, they can change their rules, whenever they want.

What happened in the last 10 years, the major labels send no original tapes overseas. The sticker mastered from original master tapes could be… mastered from the tapes or digital copy.

Regarding behind the chair, I heard crazy stories about licensing….

  5. Look, Claus, I always appreciate it when you share specific knowledge. What I don't get is why you make this kind of obscure remarks. "Regarding behaind the chair", "crazy stories"...? I have honestly no idea what you're talking about. Either you know something you want to share, then please share. Or if that's not the case, maybe don't write stuff like that in the first place?

Well, I can't share everything, because something is confidential, and I DO NOT share confidential on social media. My main statement was, licensing is a very complex matter, and I don't speculate here, why they have used this tape and not this file.

  7. Thanks. Yeah, I didn't ask you to disclose confidential information, I just really had no idea what you were talking about - and in cases where you know something that you are not allowed to share, I would prefer you saying nothing over saying something so cryptic nobody can understand it anyway. Now I got it, except I am not sure which album you are referring to when you're saying "this tape and not this file". I don't know much about licensing, but I have a very hard time believing that licensing issues were what made them replace the Paranoid, TE and NSD 2009 Pearce remasters with different files.

I "learnt" a lot of licensing an album, what Marshall Blonstein (president of Audio Fidelity) told me within more than 20 years.

Regarding Paranoid, TE and NSD, that has nothing to do with the licenses. It was a total confusing teamwork between different departments at Universal. You know how weird a computer directory can look. Fact is, the pressing plant used the wrong files. The big question is, who uploaded the files...

My copy of 1986 Castle Vol 4 has arrived and to my delight iTunes has de-emphasised it and it sounds as good as a version sent to me let me know how this album should sound.

I’ll keep the booklet of my 91 TECP - l like how it replicates the pics from the original vinyl release. The Castle booklet is pretty woeful, no list of credits, no “thanks to the great COKE company”, and a pic of a crowd from a random metal gig. But it does sound simply sublime! Couple of volume issues on a few tracks that I’ll need to tinker with - but I’m a happy Camper :righton:.Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Castle 86 is in the post.

  14. However, given the releases we've seen and all the odd mistakes that have happened, I have an inkling as to how Rhino's and Sanctuary's computer directories for Black Sabbath remasters look: crammed with numerous - and sometimes mislabeled - audio files from 1996 onward in no particular order and who knows what else. I guess we're lucky they haven't released a porn sound track as a Sabbath remaster by now.

    A porn sound track:yikes::winkgrin: :D:D:D:D

No doubt mastered from a mono VHS tape

  16. ...sourced from an old low-bitrate AVI file.:D But hey, I am sure that if it gets pressed to vinyl, it will sound great in the end.

A crime is what it is.

The good 2009 discs are *this* close to definitive for me. Missing Paranoid, Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die in that fashion still bugs me to this day. :shake:

A computer directory can look weird if it isn't properly labeled, or if you don't know what you're looking at to begin with. But people are only human, and people make mistakes.

For me the big question is who the fk decided not to do anything about it when the mistakes transpired. Those are the people I want shot at first light tomorrow morning. So to speak.

Pretty hard to beat the sound of a good analog signal path, and I looked at your equipment profile.....You have nice stuff...
Even if that copy of Vol 4 is probably digitally sourced... All measurable parameters would probably favor the digital end product, but whats brought to the ears through the analog signal path can't be quantified. It just sounds good and can't be 100% replicated digitally. That's not to say that I don't love the great digital versions out there... Only way I buy new Sabbath records is if they put out AAA, but I still get your point and agree.

  24. TBH, I've always found that the HDtracks Vol. 4 sounds like a caricature - where to find the guitar in the midst of all those cymbals, where to find any depth in all those highs? Anyway, of course we use different audio equipment, and as one of my favorite philosophers (this one was never a member of Black Sabbath!) once remarked, people "have always found that individuals were full of their own ideas, and that opinions varied as much as tastes." (Baruch de Spinoza 1677, Tractatus Politicus, in: Baruch de de Spinoza, The Political Works, ed. and trans. A. G. Wernham, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1958, p. 227) I am glad you found your favorite version, that's the important thing. I hope your wolves like it too! :)

I agree. Analog > digital > analog doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If we didn't have any acceptable alternatives sure, I would take it. Since we got the SACD and the 2009 CD and early LPs, I am good.

    This.

Update: Now I like the 2009 remaster of VOL4 more than SACD. I gave both versions more listenings through speakers and this is the result.

I liked SACD version more when I was listening through headphones (not audiophile quality). It seemed to me 2009 version had too much bass. When listening through speakers - everything was perfect...

I think I am going crazy from these comparisons :mad::mad:
