There are more possibilities if the spinoff group can include other people who weren't in the first group. So the real requirement is at least two musicians had to end up in each new band (or remain with the old band)?

Maybe the Jefferson Airplane splitting off into Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna……….though Hot Tuna was a Jorma & Jack side project before the Airplane ended.

The NY Dolls split into The Dolls '76 and The Heartbreakers.
Dolls '76 quickly imploded and we know what happened with Johnny.

Yes, at least two. So, not buying the example of Mick Jones getting booted out of The Clash, then starting BAD.

Yes, also, wouldn't there almost have to be other members or replacements?

They did back in the day for sure - though in recent years there existed two LA Guns, one led by Tracii and the other by Phil. They since reunited but now there are still two LA Guns cause Steve Riley has a version out too lol

Duran Duran evenly split into Power Station and Arcadia in 1985.

Surprised 4 pages in and no one else cited this example... first one I thought of and fits the OP intent.

    Does this count?:

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967 consisted of John Mayall, Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood. Of course, the latter 3 left to form Fleetwood Mac, and Mayall hired some new Bluesbreakers (starting with Mick Taylor on guitar) and was still going strong with various permutations prior to the pandemic.

Faust split in two in the 2000s and they both used the same name in two different versions of the group.

OK, Rocket From the Tombs split into Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys. There you go, two new bands. Edit: OK someone already said. But, Chelsea, yes.

I always thought that Peter Grant secured the rights to the name "The Yardbirds", thereby giving Jimmy Page to do whatever he felt like with the name.
