    1968 The Producers
    1968 2001

Oh, the 1970's - hands down. Even the big studio pictures were daring and adventurous. Today, Star Wars and Jaws are judged on what they became - templates for the modern summer blockbuster - but back then both were enormous risks for the studios. My Top 5 - a hard list to narrow down, I tell ya - reflects this unique era where corporate and creative audacity unified to make some truly magnificent movies...

    1. The Godfather
    2. Jaws
    3. The Exorcist
    4. Annie Hall
    5. Star Wars

...and what did I have to leave out? Apocalypse Now. The French Connection. Network. The Sting. Young Frankenstein. Alien. Harold and Maude. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Superfly. Taxi Driver. All The President's Men. The In-Laws. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Animal House...the list is incredibly long!!

  5. Indeed, the 70’s remain the greatest decade for films.

The 60’s or maybe 50’s. Too many great international films for the 70’s to compete. Loads and loads of them. This was partially due to artistic and intellectual explorations following the Second World War. The Italian neorealist movement was, at least partially, a reaction to the war. That movement, in turn, influenced film globally, including the French New Wave.

Morocco - in a classic dream-approximation of a location, Dietrich's opening night at the cabaret presents a Hollywood icon created right before our eyes. Gary Cooper seems at his understated best, with von Sternberg's handling of scenes subtler than in The Blue Angel, and more relaxed than in some of his later films (1930).

City Lights - Chaplin rings down the curtain on the silent era: perfectly balanced and vivid filmmaking, with one of the most powerful endings in film. I think he set out to make a great work of art, and succeeded (1931).

The Rich Are Always With Us - great movie, it's a definitive sophisticated pre-Code drama, with dashes of humor. Ruth Chatterton dominates; George Brent seems self-confident, and Bette Davis spirited in a supporting role (1932).

Christopher Strong - Hepburn at her most radiant, Colin Clive good-natured and intense: I love this movie, especially some poignant scenes toward the end. Selznick produced; Dorothy Arzner directed (1933)

Dangerous Corner - I love this as well, and find it ingenious, a kind of drawing room mystery with a serious twist (1934).
