I was surprised years later to recognize one of the actors as a scumbag in John Sayles' wonde3rful Matewan.
I loved this show as a little kid growing up in the 70s! I still have such a soft spot for it, even if the storytelling and production is woefully simple by today's TV standards. And, let's be honest here, it's among the action TV dramas of the era that had a muuuuuch more exciting opening theme and title sequence compared to the actual show that followed. I enjoyed rewatching a number of these when it was streaming on Netflix a few years back. Good memories, great cast. BTW, anyone here remember one or two episodes that opened with the usual title sequence, but without the music? dan c
Back then I was more interested in the scenes that involved the whole Station 51 crew. I did like the scenes with just Johnny & Roy and the scenes at Rampart. However, I REALLY liked it when the station responded to big fires. "Yeah, stuff blowing up!". The original theme with music I believe was used from seasons 1-5. Season six had that opening sequence with Johnny and Roy at a chemical spill with dialogue between them and the Rampart Staff. However, when the show went into syndication, the season six sequence was used on all of the episodes. I have the DVD set with the entire series and the made for TV movies but BUYER BEWARE!! A good deal of the episodes on the discs from season's three to five are sourced from the syndicated episodes. They are obviously many generations removed from the original prints!
The Prisoner opening and closing sequence. ENLARGE THE YouTube WINDOW FOR BEST IMPACT. A number of TV openings are on my list, for both visual design and music. The Prisoner. Mission Impossible. The Bob Newhart Show. The Wild Wild West. The Andy Griffith Show. And then a number of them primarily for the opening music. Sanford and Son. Barney Miller. The Dick Van Dyke Show. Mad About You. The Carol Burnet Show. Rawhide. There are probably many more good ones. Very subjective.
Deep Cover (1992) - I can't find a link, but the opening credits are a brief throwaway moment from later in the film, step-printed almost to the point of abstraction. Good stuff.
The very underrated THE HAUNTING OF JULIA/FULL CIRCLE with Mia Farrow has a beautiful opening scene, nice camerawork and what a soundtrack, it sets the sad mood of the film so well:
Yes, i always found it classy/stylish. The name of the director above the flowers is a cool detail too! The opening/titles sequence of this film is great, but i must add that the ending scene/last shot is even better...unforgettable.
I wish I knew who created this music for the PBS educational children's series Thinkabout! There was a cool little electronics opening to a similar '70s show I remember titled Self Incorporated. The music for Inside/Out was from a DeWolfe library album named Sifting Shades, and the track used was named Ripple, by an S. Haseley. That's one of my all-time pieces of music period!
I also remember the opening and closing of a Japanese cartoon named Super-Dimensional Century Orguss as being particularly outstanding with the end theme being titled Gypsy I think... it'd be cool to find if there is an HD of both on youtube somewhere. The show was a sequel to Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross which was 'Robotech' in N. America, but they never brought Orguss over here (or Dirty Pair another SF show I remember having quality openings and closings).
H O W A R D . H A W K S Rio Lobo | 1970 Opening titles (up to 2:11) designed and directed by DON RECORD. Great type, light and music; with creative shots of guitar intro.
Hours of fun looking for people walking along the pavement in the background during title scenes for The Omega Man..
