Some more information on the "new" DGG Complete Beethoven edition: Deutsche Grammophon - der offizielle Shop - Beethoven - The New Complete Essential Edition (Ltd Boxset) - Ludwig van Beethoven - Box set
I'm guessing that's why I've failed to find a listing for the Szeryng mega-box on Discogs, or even the Sony 25 disc Beethoven Legendary Recordings - it's too much of a hassle to create a listing!
After buying the Warner box wich I keep exploring I gained a love for Beethoven I havent had before. If I could I wouldnt mind another Beethoven box like this DG (since the other DG was completely out of my price range). Very tempting.
This description gave me shocking flashbacks of AOL dial up in the mid-1990s. It sounds incredibly clunky!
Maybe I am missing something obvious, but what is the difference with the previously available “The New Complete Edition” other than the addition of the “Essential” in the title? Is this just a repress of the previous box set?
I don't have the original, but at a quick glance it's simpler packaging, no hardback book, and missing quite a few discs - the original had more than one version of some of the repertoire.
The original had 118 cds, 3 audio blu-rays and 2 dvds while the new one has 95 cds. So the original has an extra 23 cds (alternative performances I guess - for example the Gardiner symphony cycle is missing), 2 dvds (Bernstein Fidelio and some Kleiber symphonies) and 3 blu rays (Kempff piano sonatas, Amadeus Quartet string quartets and Karajan symphonies). I also note the original box was promoted as having over 175 hours of music and the new one over 115. I assume there is nothing new in the smaller box that wasn’t in the bigger one, but we won’t know until the track listing comes out.
The last entry in the contents listing illustrates the real "cheapness" of UMGs Beethoven anniversary collections, of which this and the massive 2020 box are not the only ones; they have done this at least two times before. The cheapness is that they gave no money, or possibly even any though or effort at all, to get a worthy recording of Christ on the Mount of Olives added to their catalogue but settled for Klee recording. Maybe I am a loner here, but I have never been able to tolerate that recording. It sounds nice, is not sloppy, and the singers never miss a note. But the experience is like being in a grand ballroom with the most magnificent lights and ornamentation, but it being pitch black with zero light. That is how matter-of-fact that recording is to my ears.
I paid so much for BTHVN2020 I'll be pretty furious if this is almost the same contents for less than 1/2 the price!!!
Out of curiosity I have done a more detailed comparison of the broad description of the new box vs what is in the larger box (which I have) and it is possible to work out by and large what is in and what is out. Symphonies: Discs 11-15 (HIP symphonies and choral fantasy) are missing. 2 versions of all symphonies included Concertos: All there Ballets etc: All there Operas: All there Keyboard works: All there including alternatives Chamber music: Same number of discs. Assume the attribution of all larger chamber music to the Amadeus Quartet - otherwise there are different versions. On that basis, I would say it’s all there. Lieder: All there Folk songs: All there Choral: 1 disc missing - I would guess one of the 2 versions of Missa Solemnis. Probably the Gardiner given the artist listing. Rarities: All there The historic performances, HIP versions, dvds and blu rays are all missing. So it looks like the new version is cds 1-10, 16-95 and 97-101 from the larger box. 11-15, 96 and 102 onwards (including DVD and blu ray) have been removed.
Thank you, folks! All this information is very good to know. I missed the first release so I am considering this, although I have enough Beethoven in my collection.
60 Euro shipping to Australia... I'll wait to see what the jpc and presto prices look like, or maybe even Amazon (though I worry about their packaging)!
I would have gotten the Karajan Sibelius at that price for the bluray (I already have the CDs), but they don't seem to ship outside Belgium and Netherlands.
Teasing us in this way is unforgivable. If I were in Belgium, I'd be putting my order in immediately.
The 2020 box was sold in a price range of € 200-240, and this one costs € 166,99 at DGG Shop. I would buy it when the price sinks under € 100, a nice copy for our second home.
It's interesting that they're doing another edition - I wonder if that means that the original is OOP or at least sold very well? I would imagine that the market for a 95 CD classical box set is rather small, especially when x number of people already have the bigger version.
The 2020 box was a limited edition of 6500 copies worldwide, and seems to be OOP indeed. If I remember well, there weren't separate editions in German, English or French. So there are no 'less popular' copies left of a German (Bach 333) or French (Mozart 225) edition. What surprises me, is that the Beethoven Essential Edition is not that much cheaper than the big box, and almost twice as expensive as the Warner, Naxos and Brilliant editions. I presume we'll see a substantial price reduction pretty soon, if it isn't a strictly limited edition.
