Sorry, I may have been wrong. For decades I have been under the impression that Mr Herbert stopped them playing it live. Can't really remember where I got that info back then. Bruce's performance of the middle part "The time has come ... to make it all end" is for me his greatest moment in all Maiden records.
In addition to the title, they wanted to use a spoken word intro quoted from the book. In denying permission, Herbert refused to listen to the song or even look at the lyrics.
I read Dune ..back in 84 ..didn’t understand it much Watched the Lynch movie..understand it less Listened to To Tame a Land ..no idea ... Hope the new movie finally makes sense
Compare that to Patrick McGoohan’s alleged response to the request for a soundbite in “The Prisoner” - ‘What did you say the name was? A rock band, you say? Do it.’
The book is a fantastic story but Herbert is a terrible writer. Still, a classic space opera. The movie is incomprehensible for a variety of reasons. The song lyrics are like they hired a 10-year-old to write a book jacket blurb.
It's by far my favorite Maiden song. All of Maiden's greatness is there, and yet it still has a unique flavor.
I love the music in To Tame A Land but you're right about the lyrics. Incomprehensible to anyone who hadn't read the book. Maiden would do much better with Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Yes those lyrics are some incomprehensible premium spice melange. To Tame a Land He is the King of all the land In the Kingdom of the sands Of a time tomorrow He rules the sand worms and the Freemen In the land amongst the stars Of an age tomorrow He is destined to be a King He rules over everything On the land called planet Dune Body water is your life And without it you would die On the desert, the planet Dune Without a stillsuit you would fry On the sands so hot and dry In a world called Arrakis It is a land that's rich in spice The sand riders and the mice That they call the 'Muad' Dib' He is the Kwizatz Haderach He is born of Caladan And will take the Gom Jabbar He has the power to foresee Or to look into the past He is the ruler of the stars The time will come for him To lay claim his crown And then the foe Yes, they'll be cut down You'll see he'll be The best that there's been Messiah supreme True leader of men And when the time For judgement's at hand Don't fret he's strong He'll make a stand Against evil The fire that spreads through the land He has the power To make it all end
Love Lynch's Dune and Maiden's To Tame A Land. I had no problem following the song after seeing the movie. I tried reading the novel but kept nodding off.
I did seriously well in English at school when I knew who Samuel Coleridge was and could quote parts of the Ancient Mariner ...teacher thought I was gifted ..little did he know
"To Tame a Land" was a mainstay on the 1983 tour. Herbert stopped them from calling the song "Dune", but that was it. Bruce responded by cussing out Frank Herbert during the intro to this song most nights. Here's a version with Bruce on one of his kinder nights:
.......and here's a version of "To Tame A Land" where Bruce was apparently not feeling quite so restrained........
It’s a great song but the lyrics are terrible. They sound like a first draft/brainstorm for a lyric based on the book that was never further developed. It’s the same problem with Alexander the Great. Amazing musical composition, but the lyrics are just random listings of “in this he did this and then in that year he did that. And then… and then…” I really love Iron Maiden but it’s not because of their lyrics. I think at their best they write serviceable lyrics and at their worst you get something like “Age of Innocence”.
Brave New World is close to a flawless album imo. How anyone calling themselves a fan not at least recognize its quality (even if they dont enjoy it) is beyond me
That’s the worst part of the lyric. Such a mouthful. “Sing it with me Long Beach” Nah, you’re alright Bruce.
I agree. Except, you know, different tastes. You will also find people who dislike Revolver. But as i’ve said, i find BNW the only post 7th son album that is as good as the 80s stuff.
I dunno, I really rate Fear of the Dark, even if it is two or three songs too long. But otherwise I pretty much agree.
