Now playing: George Enescu - Troisième sonate Op. 24; Variations pour deux pianos Op. 5; Première suite "Dans le style ancien" Op.3 - Cristian Petrescu - recorded 1994-5 CD3 from this set:
Music by late-19th/early-20th Century Russian composers like Gretchaninoff, Kastalsky, Tschesnokoff & Victor Kallinikov, sung by a German choir specializing in Russian church music. Licensed from Eurodisc Musikproduktion GmbH, Germany & issued in 1965. This is simulated stereo but doesn't sound bad. One track is an amazing bass solo that has to be heard to be believed, with low notes that could shake the walls if they weren't made of stone.
Now playing: Johann Sebastian Bach - Advent Cantatas (BWV 36, 61, 62) - Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe - recorded 1996
I really wish the big Rubinstein Sony box would come back in print one day, listening to it via what I can find on YT Music and I loved this brisk Rach Piano Concerto No. 2 Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 Arthur Rubinstein (piano) Vladimir Golschmann NBC Symphony Orchestra 1946
Now playing: Aaron Copland - Our Town; The Red Pony; El Salón México; Danzón Cubano; 3 Latin American Sketches - LSO, New Philharmonia Orch., Copland - recorded 1967-1972
Really enjoyed this one, definitely my favourite symphony by Sibelius and a great performance. Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 Leonard Bernstein New York Philharmonic 1966
Going to survey some more Sibelius 2nd Symphonies today, starting with Barbirolli and New York. Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 John Barbirolli New York Philharmonic 1942
Here is another Bernstein's composer box ... So I have a good reason not to bother with any Bernstein's DG big box.
Going on the TT: Mozart Concerto for Flute & Harp in C, K.299 with James Galway (flute) and Fritz Helmis (harp). Also included here is the Mozart Concerto for Flute in G, K.313 with Andreas Blau (flute). Karajan conducts the BPO. The reliable Galway plays beautifully. Not DG, but an EMI/Angel release from 1972.
I know Galway was the principal flutist with the BPO before he struck out on his own. Not sure if he was already independent in this recording though ...
1972 issue of music by Ciconia (1335-1411). This import has a Odeon sticker over the cover logo but the label reveals the Das Stimme seines Herrn trademark of EMI Electrola. Producer: Gerd Berg. Tonmeister: Johann Nikolaus Matthes. Painting by Jan van Eyck.
On to Previn and Pittsburgh now Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 André Previn Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra 1977
1973 import on the same label as my previous post. 14th Century secular music from Jaccopo, Giovanni da Cascia & others, some anonymous. Producer: Gerd Berg. Tonmeister: Johann Nikolaus Matthes.
I lucked out on that one a few years back when I bought a new one one for under $90. Definitely a keeper!
Those Lp-sized Sony Bernstein boxes are excellent in my opinion. They issued the Symphonies box and another featuring Concertos. The latter box has a very interesting( to me) variety of material as Bernstein was encyclopedic in his interests I would say.
Yeah I love the Symphony and Concertos & Orchestral boxes. Love the form factor and the contents is great.
