To keep it on topic, John's banter on that LP is probably hilarious but my Yank ears can only decipher a few words.

Bernard actually has lots of funny stage banter, but you can't understand half of it because of his thick accent, hahaha. I remember of clip of New Order playing in Sweden and he was commenting on the kinky porn available on late-night Swedish TV.

There a quite a few clips where John is a bit stoned and/or drunk, but as soon as the first chord is played, he's in the zone. Fantasic and mesmerizing performer!

It is totally hilarious, it is also borderline obscene, especially when they get to discussing Ravel's Bolero.

Arlo Guthrie should have been a stand up comic, very funny guy. On the live version of "Motorcycle Song" he sings like 1 line and then says something like "I've been singing this stupid song for several years now"

Yep, first time I saw him was in 1980 in a university rec. hall.

Just him, guitar and small amp.

At one point he fell backwards over the amp, flat on his a*se.
He simply carried on playing, didn't miss a note and the cigarette was not even dislodged from its place in the tuning pegs area of his guitar.

At the end of the song a stage hand helped him up, refilled his glass with whatever it was and he carried on to riotous applause.

I was hooked for life then and there, the man was born to perform and his connection with his audience was like no one else I have ever seen perform.

Yeah, well part of that is clear. The last line (before "Devil") is a total blur to me, though. Care to attempt a transcript?

Michael Nesmith's banter and song intros are always almost as enjoyable as the songs.

This has some of his wildest banter and intros and also some great songs!

I'll have a good listen through headphones next time and have a go.

    Bookmarked so I don't forget.

If I can understand it all I'd best PM you rather than post on a thread!

Peter Gabriel was quite amusing when I saw him in 1980 a few months prior to the release of his 3rd solo album.

He played most of the forthcoming album live and it was wonderful.

Some drunken clown kept shouting, "Play some Genesis!"

Eventually Gabriel just said, "Looks like we have an ancient historian in the audience"

Tom Petty after the audience sings the entire "Breakdown", complete with 2 part harmony, (from "Pack Up the Plantation")

"Gonna put me out of a job!"

Anyone who thought of him as kind of a dummy yokel would have their heads turned around quick by this show we are both thinking of.

I only got to see the Smithereens with Pat Dinizio once, but he was funny. They played at a local carnival/fair and there was a little kid with one of those inflatable guitars rockin' out in front of the stage. Pat egged him on and had the crowd cheer for him. Then after the song he said, "ok kid, beat it, this is MY gig.'

Living in Boston we were sometime the targets of good natured abuse from LA bands. I saw the Chili Peppers during one of the Lakers/Celtics championships. As I recall it was when the Celtics were up 3-0 and then the Lakers won 4 in a row. The band was merciless laughing and mocking us. I also remember Mike Patton at an early Faith No More Gig making fun of random Boston bands like Gang Green.

Phil Ochs' two live albums - Phil Ochs in Concert and Gunfight at Carnegie Hall.
Example from the former - he recounts being visited by God:
"He said: 'Ochs, wake up, this is God, over.'
"I said: 'You're putting me on of course, Dylan!'"
