Interesting. The original US LP does not have Chelsea or Night Rally on it. The song listing on Acoustic Sounds for the new release does not show Night Tears even though it’s mentioned in the narrative. Is it actually on the new remaster?
Yeah, I ordered from Amazon on either Friday or Saturday, and they've delayed it three times and given me two (incorrect) tracking numbers. They first said if I didn't have it by the 15th, I would be entitled to a refund... and then on the 14th, they pushed it back to the 18th... and today they pushed it back to the 21st. I'm going to guess my order hasn't even been picked in the warehouse yet. To be fair, the order also contained a DVD and a book – that's, like, three things, I think. I'm exhausted just trying to count that stuff, can you imagine actually putting it in a box!? Whew!
“Chelsea” and “Night Rally” were deemed “too English” (as was “Sundays Best” on Armed Forces) so they weren’t on the Columbia LPs. The new remaster contains the original UK track listing, plus the “Radio Radio” UK single a-side and “Big Tears”, which was the UK “Pump It Up” single b-side.
Mine still says expected by September 14th. On the first tracking number, anyway. The second says "Please enter a valid tracking number."
Perhaps a bit unexpectedly, "Big Tears" is sequenced before "Radio Radio"on this new edition-- until now all expanded reissues of the album put RR right after "Night Rally" in an effort to create a "universal" track listing.
I did an interview with Elvis (and Sebastian Krys) about "TYM" and "Spanish Model" you may enjoy. Elvis Costello on 'This Year's Model' and Latin Stars' 'Spanish Model' - Variety
For those of you who've heard the new "TYM" remaster... it doesn't include the extended outros of "No Action" and "Pump It Up" that are part of "Spanish Model," does it?
Ryan K Smith cut the lacquers. My copy arrived today. Flawless pressing. The SQ is first rate. Looks like the LP was pressed at Pallas?
I thought that was odd too. EC has said on multiple occasions that “Big Tears” should have been on the album, so maybe this is his way of making it more inclusive? Dunno.
Perhaps that, or else to better match how they are sequenced on Spanish Model. But of course "Chelsea" and "This Year's Girl" aren't swapped on the remaster.
I got the 24/96 off Qobuz and it sounds tremendous. Punchy, dynamic, detailed and well balanced. This is my new go to digital version of TYM.
I've always thought Radio Radio feels out of place at the end of the album, as great of a song as it is. I just don't think Night Rally flows into it very well. I'm wondering if the Big Tears breather in between will help out.
Nothing but "Night Rally" should end This Year's Model. It goes out on exactly the right note. And I don't think either "Radio Radio" or "Big Tears" in their current forms match the sound or belong in the flow of the album. Nick or Jake or Elvis or whoever fixed the original running order got it right. (Historical perspective: When I bought the Columbia version on release, I wasn't an immediate fan. My Aim Is True had blown me away as a high school senior, and I wasn't quite ready to graduate. Finding musical mates in college, and finding the U.K. LP at the local indie record shop, changed everything.) But if "Radio Radio" has to be included to reflect historical Columbia butchery, and "Big Tears" to accomodate Elvis's second thoughts, then I'd prefer if the whole album were resequenced.
And of course, ending with "Night Rally" sets us up for the "emotional fascism" theme to come on Armed Forces.
It's interesting to note that in addition to a hi-res digital version, Japan also seems to have a "Deluxe" version. I think (although I'm not positive) this is the same as the 2008 deluxe edition. Same track list and the mastering is loud, like that set. Why they would bill that as the 2021 remaster is a mystery.
The same track list is showing up on Apple Music as This Year’s Model (2021 Remaster / Deluxe). It is indeed the track listing from the 2008 deluxe set except Radio Radio and Big Tears are reversed as in the remaster. It’s interesting that they’re calling Crawling to the USA and Tiny Steps 2021 remasters when both were on the Armed Forces box set last year. Weren’t they remastered then?
Probably. Or maybe not. On the Armed Forces super deluxe set, they're louder and brighter than the album itself. They may have just re-used the Rhino mastering (I haven't bought the download so I can't compare). I'm a bit disappointed that the quality of that album's remaster didn't carry over to the bonus tracks (though "Peace Love And Understanding" sounds great). That's interesting if they re-arranged the track order, but used the same mastering as before on the deluxe This Year's Model. Or maybe it is a new remaster, with way less dynamic range than the vinyl/CD/MP3/hi-res/higher-res. Why they would do that, I have no idea. I'm only guessing it's the old mastering because it's very loud, just like the Rhino/Hip-O version. I didn't listen to the sample of the deluxe download for very long because it sounded pretty nasty.
