Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Alien (1979) Blade Runner (1982) Contact (1997) Sunshine (2007) HM: -- Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956): more horror/suspense than sci-fi -- Planet of the Apes (1968) -- The Empire Strikes Back (1980): more "fantasy / adventure" than sci-fi -- Back To The Future (1985): more "comedy" than sci-fi NOTE: I'm glad one (?) other poster mentioned Danny Boyle's Sunshine (2007). If we went only by the first 2/3 of that movie, it's likely my #1 sci-fi movie ever. Unfortunately, the final third is relatively disappointing. Still a 'must-see' if you haven't.

I really love Fantastic Voyage. I like The Langoliers a lot until those special effects popped up. Even at the time of its TV premiere those effects were bad, but still a good movie.
Agreed! Fantastic Voyage is great. And the novelization by Isaac Asimov is one of my top 3 favorite books. Same with The Langoliers. I'm not a huge Stephen King fan, but this movie and novella are among my favorites. (The Rose Red miniseries is my other Stephen King favorite).
2001 Dark City The City Of Lost Children Forbidden Planet Five Million Years To Earth Honorable mention: Gattaca Children Of Men Europa
This afternoon my 5 favorite sci-fi movies were made before I was born: The Day the Earth Stood Still - 1951 The Thing - 1952 Invaders From Mars - 1953 War of the Worlds - 1953 Forbidden Planet - 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers - 1956
5 was difficult. Since others have included 6, I have as well. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) The Hidden (1987) Until the End of the World - Director's Cut (1991) Event Horizon (1997) Open Your Eyes (1997) Dark City (1998)
Enemy Mine (1985) - I don't think this movie is traditionally considered great, but I watched it when I was a little kid and I loved it. And then I watched it years later as an adult and still found it good and relevant. So I would like to give it an honorable mention
