Best Prog Rock Singer

While I realize its subjective, In my humble estimation no prog rock singer has ever matched the incomparable Marco Glühmann of the very underrated band Sylvan. Great front man with an amazing voice, and with the ability to use it to greatly enhance the music of the band without being overpowering.

Hard to argue against Jon Anderson or John Wetton.

YES! Floyd IS prog!!! Except Piper — Piper is like getting a glimpse of God, of the infinite.

That said, Jon Anderson is the greatest prog rock singer and frontman EVAH!! He is the EPITOME of the prog rock lead singer.

Only Peter Gabriel comes close to touching the prog progenitor that is Anderson.

 

I think those three are top of the heap. But I would add Phil Collins. And possibly Helmut Koellen and John Wetton. And if we decided Pink Floyd was a prog band, David Gilmour.

Huge Yes fan, but that was never because of Jon Anderson's voice which I often find too thin and airy, and frequently seemingly straind in delivery.

I consider Floyd post Saucerful up until and including Dark Side to be a Prog band. Other opinions may vary though.

All of Strawbs, my favorite Prog band, and on many days, my favorite artist of all types. Their run from Grave New World through Deep Cuts still moves me today. The 3-part AUTUMN suite from Hero & Heroine is beauty beyond words, as is Grace Darling on Ghosts, and compelling as can be are Down By The Sea on Bursting at the Seams and Hero & Heroine from the album of the same name.....

I don’t know about the best but Peter Gabriel is my favourite. His vocals with Genesis were iconic.

 

Grew up listening to Ian Anderson, Jon Anderson, Greg Lake and John Wetton, so they're obviously the prime examples when I think of prog rock vocalists. But in terms of sheer technical brilliance and power, Demetrio Stratos of Area was in a class of his own.
