Believe it or not, but I've found some of the most obscure used New Wave, that I've never seen at any other Ct store, at Johnny's in Darien. It's mostly new stuff, but they have stacks of used on the floor. I spent an afternoon digging and came away with a bunch of obscure $3 new wave.

Such as? We might all have different definitions of obscure.

Some Boston news: Blue Bag Records in North Cambridge is in the process of being sold. The original plan had been that they were going to close for a month starting October 3 and reopen in November under new ownership. That got pushed back to after the start of the new year, so current owner Chris Guttmacher (ex-Bullet Lavolta, Cul de Sac) is staying for the next few months and it's remaining open its usual hours.

Blue Bag is a good spot, I hope it stays around.

Nope. He wants to retire, probably to some little town in the Berkshires. He was asking me about New Mexico a while back.

My concern about him selling is that I worry that the new owner will turn it into just another used record store. Although I have little interest in Chris's core interests, reggae and European prog, the fact that he's into niche stuff means he buys niche stuff that fits my interests, like Italian soundtracks and library music, 70s MPB and really obscure UK and EU post punk. Maybe the new guy won't do that. Maybe he'll have his own niches. Let's find out, I guess.

Most take-overs become priced out. Western Massachusetts is really cool......fast down interstates to big cities.

I think it's pretty funny that Welfare Records' webpage now gets redirected to an on line Viagra store. :)

Although that's probably my favorite MA store that's not inside 128, I've always thought that guy has a remarkably...let's call it loose...sense of business.

I once got into a conversation about him with a couple guys who work at a local store -- one of them has been to his house and says it's basically a bed, a fridge, and about twice as many albums as he has in the store. And there's a LOT of albums in that store!

Blue Bag, In Your Ear, Cheapo under the new management, Somerville Grooves, Vinyl Index, and I'll always have a soft spot for Stereo Jack's.

We stopped by there last weekend on a run up to Northern Vermont. It was...fine. I didn't find anything particularly surprising, and some of the prices were a bit dear. $149 for a copy of Glastonbury Fayre, but it was G+ at best. I would have paid maybe $50. Also, one of the record I had in my pull pile was cracked down the middle. Which is why you always check in the store. I spent about $150, and don't regret it but I'm not sure I'd make a special trip.

I have to say that Rein's Deli was disappointing the last time I went there. It made me wonder if they had changed hands, or maybe I just hit time on an off day, but I used to go there a lot when I lived in Massachusetts, and they were always very consistent.

Records The Good Kind, on the other hand, seems to get better and better. I got a nice little haul the last time I was there and could have spent twice as much easily.

Boston area record shows...but they are down for the count on most.

I was about to repost about this store myself, you beat me to it. Sad to say I don't disagree with your recent assessment. I have gone 4 more times since my initial trip in May. Each time I have come away with fewer and fewer LP's-only one the last time. The grading is a little optimistic sometimes, the pricing is not totally outrageous, but often seem to trend toward the higher side. My first visit where I found a Beatles grail on the wall may have been a bit of a lucky fluke. I will second your saying: aways check in the store. Any store. Also I will amend my final assessment to read: ...still definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Maybe not worth a special trip/long drive just to go here.

That suggests to me that he's not getting the turnover a good used store needs to thrive. I fear if I went back a year from now, he'd have largely the same stock.

The pricing seemed odd to me. He had both volumes of the Chris Parry-curared post-punk compilation 20 of Another Kind, but volume 1 was like $40 and volume 2--which frankly has a somewhat more mainstream track listing with way more bands a younger person just getting into the style would recognize--was only $18. Just odd.

For people in the northeast, Newbury Comics has 20% off vinyl in store today and tomorrow. Discount is taken off the sales price for items already marked down, which isn’t always the case.

not a record store per se, but Antiques on Elm is a multi vendor antique shop and a few of the vendors have records for sale.
i saw a lot of classic rock when i was there yesterday. prices did not seem outrageously high. this may be of interest if you're in the area.

yesterday i went to Metro City Records in Manchester NH.
    it's a very small store that's only open a few hours daily M - F.
small selection of records, prices seem reasonable.

Friends, can anybody please recommend any record stores close to the MA/NH border (or even a bit away from it) that have a robust, easily accessible used country music section?

I'm trying to collect artists on CD, and it's driving me up the wall...so vinyl is really the way to go.

Stuff like Jeannie C. Riley, Tom T. Hall, Townes van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Jeff Walker, Western swing revivalists Asleep at the Wheel, Jerry Reed, Charley Pride, Charlie Rich, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, George and Tammy, Johnny Paycheck, etc.

Bullmoose in Salem was a bust, unfortunately.

I would deeply, dearly appreciate any help.

By easily accessible I mean in the shelves, not under the cabinets or in a basement, because as much as it sucks, I'm overweight and disabled and don't totally feel comfortable potentially injuring myself (and inconveniencing others) for the sake of a record??

Townes will be extremely tough, especially originals. The rest, any decent record shop should have a lot of that stuff. I gotta think the shop in Manchester (name escapes me) might be of interest. And Skeletone Records in Rochester should have titles that you'd be into.

Mystery Train in Gloucester, MA has a nice sized country section. The store is quite big and well worth the trip. Good luck!
