I've avoided this guy sensing he was a gimmicky player (he's also a "crossover artist"), but man...can he ever play! He's a fearless virtuoso, and plays with tremendous passion. I'll have to look into more of his recordings.
NP: Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor. Op. 35 Mikhail Rudy, piano Ole Edvard Antonsen, trumpet Berliners Jansons
There's actually three pieces on this recording: Carmen-Suite and Concertos for Orchestra Nos. 1 & 2.
I like Minimalism if it's combined with other styles like John Adams for example. A work like Harmonielehre is much more than Minimalism. It's almost like Maximist Minimalism. Boy, that's a mouthful.
It's corrupted file from a FLAC album download I bought over at Presto. Usually, CD track rips don't just abruptly stop or end up with a bitrate of 36.
First listen to CD 28 from "Charles Munch - The Complete RCA Album Collection" on Sony. Beethoven - Symphony No. 6
Listening to CD 8 from "Beethoven - The Piano Sonatas" performed by Vladimir Ashkenazy on London. Sonatas 25-28
Now playing: Aaron Copland - Clarinet Concerto; Music for the Theater; Quiet City; Dance Panels - David Shifrin, Mark Hill, Neil Baum, New York Chamber Symphony, Gerard Schwarz - recorded 1998
Adams is a hit/miss composer for me. Scheherazade.2 is a work I need to listen to in order to have any kind of opinion of it. And yes, it's quite far removed from minimalism. But this can be said of many of his later works where it seems he has broken away from that kind of style.
On the turntable: Still going through $2 finds from my most recent Goodwill Store visit Sibelius - The Philharmonia Orchestra, Karajan – Symphony No. 5 In E Flat Major Op. 82 / Finlandia Angel Records – S35922
A great program of works. I always felt that Dance Panels was underrated in that it seldom gets mentioned in the same breath as Appalachian Spring or Billy the Kid. It's a fine work. In fact.... NP: Copland Dance Panels Detroit SO Slatkin
Talking about a great program @Mirror Image: Now playing: Elliott Carter - Concerto Pour Hautbois; Esprit Rude; Esprit Doux; A Mirror On Which To Dwell; Penthode - Heinz Holliger, Sophie Cherrier, André Trouttet, Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Pierre Boulez - recorded 1987
Listening to "Carter - Duo for Violin and Piano / Sessions - Sonata for solo violin / Eckardt - Stromkarl" performed by Miranda Cuckson (violin) and Blair McMillen (piano) on Urlicht.
From the CD included in the Philips analogue box. I absolutely love this performance! Sound is very good too.
MS 7093, issued 1968. I think this is my earliest Columbia LP that was apparently issued only in stereo. Recorded 2/10 & 13/61 (Soldat) and 8/23-25/65 (Pulcinella). Producer: John McClure. 1970s pressing.
On the turntable: Two-disc set. Another $2 find at the Goodwill Store the other day. Great sound quality on this one--not to mention the performances. Jörg Demus – Beethovens Clavier (Sonaten Op. 78, 109, 110 / Bagatellen Op. 126) BASF – KHF 20328
MS 7106, issued 1968. Recorded 1/2-3/68 and 2/1/68, Carnegie Hall, NYC. "Bud" Graham & John Guerriere. Engineer for CBS Television: Laurence Schneider. 1968-70 pressing.
