Don't like Bogart much - I certainly don't make a point of watching a Bogart movie (unlike Cary Grant) - but I really liked him in The African Queen and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I guess I just see him definitely fitting well into certain roles and definitely not into others, including Spade and Marlowe. The latter two detectives are especially troublesome, since my reading of Hammett and Chandler suggest the following more (who aren't very Bogie-esque):
Someone in my building was throwing out a stack of DVDs. I took the following, which was a sealed copy! Too bad it wasn't Blu-ray. Ronald Reagan never got that big movie break that could have launched him to the next level, like his first wife Jane Wyman (Johnny Belinda). I think this was a close as he got. I believe he lost out only because of other commitments. The part in question went to Tim Holt. I don't think he was ever close to getting a part in Casablanca (also opposite Bogart) as some suggest.
Angels With Dirty Faces Blu ray announced for December 14th ! Angels with Dirty Faces Blu-ray (Warner Archive Collection)
High Sierra now half price on Amazon ! Love it when Amazon matches B & N every time they have their Criterion Collection 1/2 price sale.
Watched last night. Terrific transfer and package with a bio of Bogart, a Western remake of High Sierra and a feature length bio of Raoul Walsh. I really hope Criterion is able to continue to license titles from the Warner catalog. It's about time these movies got some serious love. I vote for The Roaring Twenties next. Great movie too. I would say this film really established Bogart's screen personae as the kind of hang dog, world weary guy who you tend to root for even when he is not being a particularly good egg. This and In a Lonely Place make compelling career bookends. Interesting tidbit from the supplementals, the dog Pard was actually Bogart's own dog!
The other night TCM had a bunch of Sidney Greenstreet films. Hadn’t seen Maltese Falcon in a while and forgot how fun it is, how fast moving it is, doesn’t even have to make a lot of sense other than you know everyone is screwing over everyone, and good actors and dialog elevate everything. Across the pacific I hadn’t seen before and was alright, fun seeing a bunch of Maltese Falcon cast like Mary Astor in that too. and Conflict I’d seen before, maybe on Noir Alley? It’s fun, nothing life changing but to see Bogart planning the perfect Murder is fun. I need to see High Sierra. Once things quiet down around here with work and family I want to subscribe to Criterion Channel, so hopefully it’s on there. I saw they added Pickup on High Street recently and that’s one I’ve been meaning to see for years too.
And it's half price for now ! https://smile.amazon.com/Pickup-Str...49&s=movies-tv&sprefix=PICKUP+,aps,335&sr=1-1
Yup. I’ve bought plenty of criterion blu’s in the past. I think for now that $20 gets me two months of the criterion channel with a ton of choices
Understood. In just the last 3 years I've switched to streaming over buying physical copies myself. Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, etc. I still make certain exceptions, and like right now, damn glad I do. It took the extras on the High Sierra Criterion to make me realize I owned about 20 of Raoul Walsh's films ! I had bought each film over the years for every conceivable reason other than the director. I've since pulled them all, and am watching them again with each passing day.
Last minute HOT TIP!! Early HB film from 1932 “Three On A Match” will be shown on TCM.. > THIS Sunday morning at 6:00 AM Eastern time.. This is a must see if you’re a Bogie lover.. small but vintage early Bogie! With Joan Blondell & Bette Davis too.
A rare banned publicity photo from the pre-code Bogie film ‘’THREE ON A MATCH’’ - Airing this morning at 6:00 AM Eastern on TCM. Joan Blondell (1932) Three On A Match Banned publicly photo
Joan Blondell is one of my top ladies from that era. She always played down to earth dames but had pure class. She was always at her best with James Cagney but could tango with anyone. Raw talent, charm and beauty.
Joan simply always a favorite of mine.. enjoyed her in everything really. Recently happened to luck out and catch her Twilight Zone TV show performance which was great and she was feisty to the end.
FYI ~ A number of Bogies start tomorrow night on TCM, running all night till noon time. Thursday .. 7 PM - 11:45 AM Central . Includes a few seldom seen ones. Enjoy!
That's why they call it film noir! Personally, it's not only my favourite Bogart film, it's a contender for favourite noir as well. I'm a fan of Bogart, and I love all the films listed above, but I must say seeing him in his lesser movies makes it plain that he was truly one of our greatest actors. Films like The Harder They Fall show that he could shine brilliantly in arguably lesser roles.
