I've seen the usual suspects...Nightmare on Elm street, Friday 13, Fright Night (I loved this one), Child's play, Poltergeist, Reanimator, Basket Case, Critters, and others.. Can you please recommend some good ones?
Hi Sear: Evil Dead I and II The thing the Believers and Serpent and the Rainbow. Both voodoo themed. Prince of Darkness The Shining The Changeling Hellraiser I and II Pumpkin head Phantasm II, the first one is late seventies. t
I started watching the changeling last night it’s awesome so far. A little strange that they borrowed the pounding sound from the haunting so unabashedly however. My fingers don’t work typing on iPhones screw punctuation
That's a good observation, I don't think I noticed that. Didn't the Legend of Hell House have similar pounding?
I only didn’t finish watching it because it was late and I was getting a little drowsy and I wanted to be on the edge to watch it! Lol
Angel Heart directed by Alan Parker starring Mickey Rourke and Robert DeNiro is criminally underrated, surreal and smart. You can't go wrong with David Cronenberg in that decade. Videodrome, The Fly, and Dead Ringers are all great. Return of the Living Dead is a wickedly funny gory classic, just avoid the terrible sequels of that one. If you liked Fright Night you should like that one. From Beyond has a lot of the same people as Re-Animator, but is not quite as good. Still a good watch though. The Hitcher has a great performance by Rutger Hauer and is compelling. Christine by Carpenter isn't very scary, but I think it's a pretty decent flick with good performances, you can never go wrong with Harry Dean Stanton. So here's the list, with a few extras as I thought of them. Angel Heart The Fly Dead Ringers Return of the Living Dead From Beyond The Hitcher Christine Videodrome An American Werewolf in London Cannibal Holocaust (pioneered the found footage genre) The Hidden (Kyle MacLachlan gives a very funny performance) Day of the Dead (I don't care for it much despite loving the first two films in the trilogy, but many people do love it and it's Romero so I couldn't exclude it) Tried to avoid the more obvious like The Evil Dead I & II, The Thing, The Shining, etc. I figure people have already covered those, and you said you've seen the most popular ones anyhow. If I were you I would also go to Vinegar Syndrome's website and see what they've put out that looks interesting to you. Even if you don't buy from them you can still read the descriptions of several films that are almost never mentioned anywhere else. They do a lot of obscure horror.
John Carpenter's THE THING is a remarkable movie, as it reflects the most they could do with prosthetic makeup. And to think that the relatively restrained ALIEN and ALTERED STATES represented the state of the art only a few years previously.
I saw the 1988 remake of The Blob in the theatre when it came out. It was not a hit at the time but I liked it, mainly for the special effects.
It was ok for what it was but it lacked the cool title song of the original: " It leaps/ It creeps / Beware of The Blob!" Written by Burt Bacharach!
That is true, the Blob theme is perhaps the best part of the movie! You know, I only recently realized the actress who played Steve(n) McQueen's girlfriend later became Helen Crump on the Andy Griffith show. Also the revisions in the story about the blob's origins seem cliche nowadays, what with 38 years hindsight. Since the '88 Blob was a remake, maybe listen along to a The Blob Theme cover version by Wolfman Jack and the Jaggerz while watching the opening credits?
Speaking of the 80s, and The Blob, reminded me of The Stuff ! OK so it's a little tongue-in-cheek, but it's very much an 80s flick(1985). Directed by Larry Cohen who also did 1982's Q - The Winged Serpent which is a good, more serious monster horror movie with an interesting cast: Michael Moriarty, Candy Clark, David Carradine, and Richard Roundtree
Tetsuo: The Iron Man, a 1989 film from Japan. About a man who finds himself turning into metal. Simultaneously horrific and amusing, it's hard to describe it's so over the top. At least you can say to yourself there's no way something like this can happen in real life. At least you'd hope so!
