It means play to serve the song, be in the pocket, while not sounding boring like a metronome.

Very few drummers can do this.

But he also stressed that he meant it in a good way as a way of implying how creative Paul was in his simplicity.

Just watched Ringo’s masterclass drumming video..was hoping to find a thread like this. Ringo was great on that video, has always been a very charismatic guy and was an extraordinary asset to the Beatles and necessary balancer in the band and with their personalities. Though I was unable to make it to his last concert despite buying tickets, I had to wait for hubby to pick me up at a point trying to walk to the area …so missed his last concert unfortunately…am so very glad I saw him with all Starr band twice, first time with entwhistle, Zach, randy Bachman…second time with Todd and Toto, etc.

Well, paul wasn’t a virtuoso pianist by any means, but he was most assuredly the best pianist in the Beatles ….though the others could certainly play it also and sometimes did….

Guess abbey road one counts as his main/only one…He wasn’t that type of showy drummer…

While recording drums, I have asked drummers to play like Ringo, Dave Clark, and Keith Moon.

I'd expect that of any musician of reasonable ability...?

Kind of off-topic, but I've always wondered about Ringo and his playing a "right-handed kit" though he's left-handed. I may be missing something, but -why didn't/doesn't he just move the kit around?

As a drummer of over 30 years, to me it means ‘play it properly’. Make it feel like there’s no other way to play it.

I agree but I think the comment was referring like to go take a leak in the middle of a song and then come back and pick right up still in the middle of a song.

Remember the poor guy who replaced Ringo on tour in '64 while he had tonsillitis?

Surely the very definition of being asked to 'play it like Ringo'.

As a drummer myself, I always aspire to play it like Ringo. I spent the first two years of my drumming life basically only drumming to Beatles tracks, so he's ingrained into me.

My brother has been playing drums behind me for the vast majority of our lives. I can shout out maybe the names of a dozen drummers and they are all code for one style or another.

When I call out for Ringo, or alternately "girl group" I am expecting playing from the bridge of From Me To You.

"I've got arms that long to hold you..."

    Boom ta ta boom ta

… and if the session drummer can’t get it right, he knows he could just as easily be replaced by Ringo! Talk about motivation!

Guessing he learned on a right-handed kit and just kept going with it; much easier for McCartney to flip a guitar over and play a righty lefty than it is to rearrange an entire drum kit every time.

He is a lefty and played a righty kit (for The Beatles at least), Revolution in the Head makes mention of a handful of interesting fills with this setup.

he went along with his own inner pace, shuffled tempo at his will, hit the snare and toms with a uniqueness that you know it's him, changing his accent and strike at will

and best of all his loping-around grooved in amazingly with his Fab Four more perfectionist bass player for my favourite group and rhythm section in pop/rock ever

totally Ringo - Isn't it a Pity, Glass Onion
totally not Ringo - What is Life, Back in the USSR

He changes his snare pattern between the first two verses of Glass Onion, being himself, drummers notice when trying to imitate :D
