I love posts like this. You add so much to the forums. I don't understand someone's need for their opinion to be the right one. Neither of us are wrong. We just disagree.

Are you claiming that Elton stepped aside on that album and let Bernie write the songs all on his own - words AND music?

Or do you mean he was the only lyricist for the songs on that album?

Words on paper is not a song, which is all Bernie did - they weren't "songs" until Elton set those words to music!

Elton John has made many poor albums over the years but Billy Joel has never made a good album. Joel is essentially a souped up Harry Chapin. He could never make albums like Tumbleweed Connection, Honky Chateau or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

If those are your favorite Elton songs then make sure you get his two 1975 albums “Captain Fantastic “ and “Rock of the Westies.”

Hogwash. Billy Joel made five amazing albums in a row 1976-1982.

When I read the title of the thread I thought you wanted his adress and phone number.

Just start with the older stuff, early 70s; however some of his later records will surprise you as well.

I find listening to the music a good approach.

I agree - though I am not a completist when it comes to Elton. I would add Madman Across the Water to your list - the early catalogue and Madman in particular - have been great "late" discoveries to me and show he was much more than the glitz showman he became. As you say, Too Low For Zero is an underappreciated gem and I can't say there is a better album after that.

Daniel was a song I never liked, in fact I didn't even understand why others liked it so much.

but he was great up thru Blue Moves which is my personal favorite. On Blue Moves, for me, half the songs are gold, the other half I don't like much, you have to pick and choose, that's how to 'get him'.

You don’t have to get Elton Johns entire catalogue. There are very few artists who I love everything they produce. You get what you get.

This is the best advice I have seen, as a starting point. The Very Best of EJ may be enough for you and many others. It has all or most of the big hits, and there are lots of them. GYBR is arguably his best album. I still like his self-titled second album, not least because it contains Border Song, Your Song, and Take Me To the Pilot, and has a certain rawness. Beyond that, Madman Across the Water, and Tumbleweed Connection. But his peak really was around 70-75, in my view.

There was this time when Patrick Stewart was performing Shakespeare at a theatre, and two guys sat in the front row in Starfleet Uniforms. When interviewed about the diehard Trekkie fans, Stewart said, "I wanted to hurt them."

This is how I feel every time the ****ing Beatles are ****ing mentioned in every ****ing thread on this ****ing boomer forum.

A lot of grit and attitude, something Elton does well in small doses. A cocky piano player with something to prove. It’s all right, Elton. You don’t have to tell us about how much you miss your “lady”.

  25. Agreed, I saw him in 1970, before he was the Liberace of Rock & Roll, opening for Derek and the Dominoes. He was quite good.
